Aosta's Christmas market in Piazza Chanoux, with wooden chalets and an alpine atmosphere
The Marché Vert Noël is Aosta's Christmas market, set up in Piazza Émile Chanoux, the town hall square in the historic center. Each year, the central area transforms into an alpine village made of wooden chalets, a fir forest, and a large Christmas tree, with light installations that envelop the square and surrounding monuments. The event is organized by the Municipality of Aosta with the Regional Department of Agriculture of the Aosta Valley and the Chambre Valdôtaine, and has received the "Excellent European Christmas Market" recognition.
In the chalets, you'll find creations by regional artisans: wooden objects, felted wool, ceramics, home decor, and Christmas decorations, alongside typical gastronomic products such as Fontina DOP, cured meats, alpine cheeses, and mountain wines. The refreshment stands serve vin brûlé and hot specialties to ward off the alpine cold.
The program includes workshops for children, demonstrations of traditional crafts (woodworkers, blacksmiths), thematic lighting of Emilio Lussu Park and Torre Pailleron, an ice skating rink in Piazza Narbonne, and video mapping projected onto Porta Pretoria, the city's iconic Roman monument. The setup is spectacular, with thousands of LED microlights and light effects spread throughout the center.
The market is divided into several phases — En attendant le Marché, Marché de l'Immaculée, Marché Vert Noël, and Marché du Nouvel An — and accompanies the city from Advent until Epiphany. In recent years, it has seen excellent attendance from Italian and foreign visitors, particularly French, Swiss, and Spanish, confirming its status as a key Christmas destination in the Alps and the Aosta Valley Region.
The 17th edition of the Marché Vert Noël continues to grow: 48 wooden chalets, 15% more than in 2024, set up in Piazza Chanoux. The setup recreates an alpine village with a fir forest and a large Christmas tree decorated with 400 baubles and 7,200 microlights. The entire central area is enlivened by light installations, video mapping projected onto Porta Pretoria, and light effects. The children's workshops, traditional craft demonstrations, thematic lighting of Emilio Lussu Park and Torre Pailleron, the ice skating rink in Piazza Narbonne, and the refreshment stands with vin brûlé are all confirmed. The 2025 edition received the "Excellent European Christmas Market 2025" recognition.
