About Anzio Carnival

Every February, Anzio, a coastal city within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, transforms into a grand open-air stage for the "Anzio in Maschera" Carnival. Piazza Garibaldi, the city center, and local neighborhoods come alive with masks, giant mascots, street performers, jugglers, and live music. Parades, costumed walks, and creative workshops engage families, children, and schools in a free event that blends popular tradition, the sea, and joy along the Lazio coast.

The seaside Carnival of Anzio

The Anzio Carnival, also known as "Anzio in Maschera", is one of the most anticipated winter events on the coast south of Rome. Every year, in the heart of February, the center of this town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region, comes alive with parades, shows, masks, and confetti. The heart of the festivities is Piazza Garibaldi, overlooking the harbor, but events extend throughout the city center, along Via Gramsci, to the gardens of the Zodiaco district, and to the hamlet of Lavinio in Piazza Lavinia.

A theme that tells the city's story

The 2026 edition chose the theme "Anzio between myth, sea, and cinema", a tribute to the territory's historical and cultural identity: its mythological roots linked to the sea, its maritime vocation, and its connection to the silver screen. This theme is reflected in the sets, costumes, and entertainment throughout the festival days.

Parades, masks, and street performers

The program alternates between moments dedicated to children and events for all ages:

  • Masked parades along Via del Faro leading to Piazza Garibaldi, featuring costumed groups;
  • "Red carpet carnival" with performers, giant mascots, and street artists;
  • "Carnival run", the costumed walk through the city;
  • Entertainment, juggling, and face painting in squares and neighborhoods;
  • Concerts and live music, from traveling swing bands to rock tributes;
  • Creative workshops such as screen printing and cyanotype, and the best mask competition.

A community celebration

Organized by the Municipality of Anzio with the involvement of local associations, including the local Pro Loco, the Carnival actively involves schoolsโ€”which bring Piazza Garibaldi to life on Shrove Tuesdayโ€”and families from the coast. The event, which is free to attend, is a perfect opportunity to experience Anzio outside the summer season, combining carnival tradition with the charm of a seaside city.

Anzio, between history and the coast

A city on the Tyrrhenian coast about 60 kilometers from Rome, Anzio is famous for its harbor, beaches, and valuable archaeological heritage, from the Villa of Nero to the Landing Museum. The Carnival fits into this context as a popular celebration that adds color to the winter on the Lazio coast.

Anzio Carnival โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Anzio Carnival, themed "Anzio between myth, sea, and cinema," took place from February 12 to 17 with masked parades, street performers, giant mascots, concerts, and workshops across Piazza Garibaldi, the center, the neighborhoods, and the hamlet of Lavinio. Despite bad weather on the opening days, most of the program was rescheduled, culminating in the grand finale on Shrove Tuesday.
