Three evenings of Cilento cuisine in the village of Acquavella, Casal Velino
The Antichi Sapori Acquavellesi Festival is a culinary celebration that brings the village of Acquavella to life. Located in the hills of Casal Velino, in the province of Salerno, this charming spot lies in the heart of the Campania region and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. For three consecutive nights, the village center becomes an open-air food trail featuring stalls, communal tables, music, and illuminated alleys until late.
The event is organized by the San Michele Arcangelo Parish of Acquavella, which relies on local volunteers, families, and youth every year. This community spirit is what makes the festival special: there are no guest chefs or commercial catering here, just the local men and women preparing traditional dishes. The name says it all: the "ancient flavors of Acquavella" are home-cooked recipes passed down through generations, shared with residents, tourists, and food lovers alike.
The menu is a perfect summary of Cilento's rustic peasant cuisine, defined by simple, flavorful ingredients:
Everything is served with the typical rhythm of a village fair: grab your tray, find a seat at the communal tables, and enjoy a meal in good company, often sitting next to someone you just met.
Beyond the food, the festival offers musical entertainment, folk performances, and activities for all ages, aimed at celebrating the cultural and social heritage of the Acquavella community. It is the perfect opportunity for visitors to hear live Cilento folk music and experience how a small village can still throw a great party without the need for massive stages.
The setting alone is worth the trip. Acquavella has medieval roots, and its name derives from the numerous water springs that monks harnessed over the centuries; a donation document from 1092 confirms its existence a millennium ago. In the center of the village stands the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, which dates back to around the year 1000 and is dedicated to the patron saint celebrated in September. The village is divided into two districts, Capo Casale and Pere Casale, separated by the Alento River valley.
Acquavella is just a few kilometers from the archaeological site of Velia, the ancient Elea of the philosophers Parmenides and Zeno, and the beaches of Marina di Casal Velino, some of the most highly-rated on the Cilento coast. Festival-goers can easily plan a full day: beach or archaeology by day, dinner in the square by night. It is the most direct way to understand what the "Mediterranean diet" really means in this part of Campania, where the concept was born and remains a daily practice rather than just a label.
The event is free to enter: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls, which open every evening from 7:00 PM. No reservations are required, but on weekends, it is best to arrive early to secure a seat at the tables.
From July 10th to 12th, 2026, the center of Acquavella, in the municipality of Casal Velino, hosted the Antichi Sapori Acquavellesi Festival, organized by the San Michele Arcangelo Parish. The event, included in the official 2026 Summer program presented by the municipal administration, featured three consecutive nights of traditional Cilento peasant dishes prepared according to recipes passed down through generations.
The menu featured gnocchi al sugo, Cilento-style pizza, grilled meats, and other local delicacies, all made with authentic, zero-kilometer ingredients. The food stalls opened every evening starting at 7:00 PM, with free admission to the event.
In addition to the culinary offerings, the festival was enriched by musical entertainment, folk performances, and activities for all ages, designed to celebrate the cultural and social heritage of the Acquavella community and bring together residents, tourists, and food lovers.
