A historical re-enactment of the Tuscan New Year in the medieval village of Corneda, Tresana
The Annunciation New Year in the Village of Corneda is a historical re-enactment held in the small hamlet of Corneda, within the municipality of Tresana, in the province of Massa-Carrara, in the heart of the Tuscan Lunigiana. The event celebrates a tradition deeply rooted in Tuscany's history: until 1749, the civil year in this region did not begin on January 1st, but on March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation, commemorating the Archangel Gabriel's announcement to Mary and the incarnation of Christ. This spring event is inspired by that ancient custom, which is still commemorated today in many Tuscan towns with historical pageants.
For one day, the narrow cobbled alleys and stone houses of Corneda are transformed into an authentic medieval village. The medieval market fills the town with artisan stalls showcasing ancient crafts, while the atmosphere is brought to life by musicians, men-at-arms, and costumed performers. It is a perfect opportunity to rediscover a hidden corner of the Lunigiana, a land of castles and ancient parish churches, in an intimate and evocative setting.
The event opens in the morning with an inauguration ceremony attended by local authorities and continues throughout the day with activities spread across the village. Typical highlights include:
Starting from the early afternoon, visitors can enjoy lunch in the village featuring local specialties prepared by Tresana's associations. The gastronomy of the Lunigiana, with its genuine, rustic flavors, accompanies the day and helps make the experience complete and immersive.
The event is organized by the Le mie Radici Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Tresana and the Tresana Civil Protection, with the patronage of the Regional Council of Tuscany. The first edition took place in 2019, and since then, the Annunciation New Year has become a highly anticipated spring event in the Lunigiana, successfully blending historical memory, community participation, and the promotion of a small Tuscan village.
The 2026 edition was held on Sunday, April 26 in the village of Corneda, Tresana. The day opened at 10:45 AM with the inauguration ceremony attended by local authorities.
Key participants included the historical group Oste Malaspinaensis, the Compagnia del Guiterno with ancient crafts from Regnano, the Compagnia della Quercia Nera with falconry displays, SiAmo Lunigiana with traditional games, and the Associazione Arcieri della Luna for archery. The program was completed by a chess workshop, a kamishibai puppet theater for children, and a lecture on the history of the Knights Templar. From 12:30 PM, visitors enjoyed lunch in the village featuring local specialties.
Corneda is a hamlet in the municipality of Tresana (MS), in the Lunigiana region. By car, it can be reached via the A15 Parma-La Spezia motorway (Aulla exit) or the A12, continuing along local roads towards Tresana. The nearest train station is Aulla Lunigiana, from where you can continue by car.
Admission to the event is generally free. Lunch featuring local products is available for purchase at the village's food stalls.
We recommend wearing comfortable footwear to navigate the village's cobbled stone alleys. For updated information, please refer to the Municipality of Tresana and the organizers' social media pages.
