A museum of art in nature in the heart of Tuscia

At the foot of the village of Calcata, in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, Opera Bosco - Museum of Art in Nature is an open-air contemporary art museum and laboratory. Inaugurated in 1996 and part of the Lazio Regional Museum Organization since 1997, it spans three hectares of woodland within the Treja Valley Regional Park, set in a striking gorge carved by the river. Here, artists create their installations using only raw natural materials found in the forest, extending the concept of aesthetics to the entire ecosystem.

The annual March reopening

Every year, the museum closes during the winter for trail maintenance and the planning of new works, only to reopen in mid-March with a public celebration. It is the moment when visitors return to walk the installation trail and discover the new season's additions, accompanied by the artists and museum staff.

A day of art, forest, and community

The reopening revolves around a guided tour of the Art in Nature trail, a two-hour itinerary through works immersed in the vegetation. At the end of the walk, a convivial moment brings visitors together: a tasting of local biodistrict products and a chat with the artists who bring the museum to life.

An experience for families

The day is also designed for younger visitors: after the tour, Opera Bosco organizes creative workshops where children shape small artworks using leaves, branches, and other materials gathered in the forest. It is a way to introduce new generations to contemporary art and environmental education in a unique natural setting.

Calcata and the Treja Valley

The village of Calcata, perched on a tuff spur and a long-time refuge for artists and artisans, is part of the protected area system of the Viterbo Tuscia region. A visit to Opera Bosco fits naturally into a day spent discovering the village and the Treja Valley Park, with its trails, waterfalls, and pristine nature. Hiking shoes are recommended, as the trail includes some elevation changes along the gorge.
