The farmers' market and grand village banquet in the heart of Cilento
Andamento Lento is neither a traditional food festival nor an event built around a stage: it is a day designed to slow down, rediscover old-fashioned customs, and bring village life back to the center of the town. In Vallo della Lucania, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of Cilento and thus the most authentic Campania, the format brings the rhythm of Sundays of yesteryear back to the square: first the farmers' market, then the long shared banquet. The concept, created by the pizzeria Stratto Pizza e Fermento, is summarized in a very simple invitation from the organizers: eat, drink, and stay, without haste and without a strict schedule to follow.
The morning begins in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele with the farmers' market curated by Ràreche, the rural and natural market of Cilento that brings together small producers and artisans from the area. The idea is to recreate the atmosphere of the markets that animated the city until the eighties, when Vallo della Lucania was the commercial reference point for the entire district. Among the stalls, you will find:
At lunchtime, the rhythm shifts again, moving from the bustle of the market to the leisure of a Sunday lunch. Along Corso Fratelli De Mattia, a very long table is set up, capable of hosting hundreds of diners: in the most recent edition, about four hundred participants were seated, transforming the town center into one big celebration. The menu is that of the past, built on products harvested that very morning and home-style recipes, while music, singing, and dancing accompany the afternoon. Participation in the lunch is always by mandatory reservation, as seats are limited.
Andamento Lento was born in the summer of 2025 from an idea by Stratto Pizza e Fermento, together with the Campania da Vivere community, as a conscious tourism project in the lesser-known villages of Cilento. After starting in Vallo della Lucania, the format reached the Abbey of Santa Cecilia in Castinatelli, the village of Laurino, and the Franciscan convent of Cuccaro Vetere, continuing in 2026 with new stops, including the castle of Gioi Cilento. Each event has a different character—market, candlelight dinner, guided tours, workshops—but the same underlying philosophy.
The initiative is supported by a wide network of local associations and entities: Legambiente Campania, Slow Food, the Park Museum, the Pro Loco Gelbison, Vallo Cilento, and the Perrella Network, in addition to the Ràreche producers themselves. The stated goal is to promote the short supply chain and the conviviality typical of village banquets, in a territory that is the recognized homeland of the Mediterranean Diet. Not a nostalgic operation, then, but a concrete way to bring producers, restaurateurs, and residents together.
Nestled at about 380 meters above sea level and inhabited by just over eight thousand people, Vallo della Lucania is the administrative, educational, and commercial center of Cilento, located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Its historic center, the porticoes of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, and its proximity to the sea of Ascea, Pioppi, and Casal Velino make it an ideal base for exploring both the coast and the inland villages.
The day opened early in the morning in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, where from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM the farmers' market curated by Ràreche was held, with Cilento producers, local specialties, and artisan stalls. Vintage cars also appeared among the stalls, recreating the atmosphere of the markets that animated the city until the eighties.
At 1:00 PM, the rhythm changed: on Corso Fratelli De Mattia, the banquet table was set up, with about 400 people seated and the town center transformed into one big celebration, with music, singing, and dancing. The lunch, designed as it was done in the past, was created in collaboration with Elma, with the arrangements entrusted to Sara De Marco.
The initiative, conceived by Stratto Pizza e Fermento, was supported by Legambiente Campania, the Park Museum, Slow Food, Pro Loco Gelbison, Vallo Cilento, and the Perrella Network, with the aim of promoting the short supply chain and the conviviality typical of village banquets.
