The major biennial folk festival in the historic center of Bressanone
The Altstadtfest Brixen, or Bressanone Old Town Festival, is one of the most beloved popular events in the municipality of Bressanone (Brixen), in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. Held biennially in even-numbered years, the entire Altstadt turns into a massive open-air stage for three days: squares, alleys, and porticoes of the city's medieval heart fill with stalls, stages, music, and the aromas of traditional cuisine.
The hallmark of the Altstadtfest is its deeply communal nature: the festival is organized and brought to life by more than thirty local associations, which manage the refreshment points and curate the entertainment. Volunteers from city groups—marching bands, traditional costume groups, Schützen companies, and sports and cultural associations—breathe life into the event, fostering an encounter between generations, guests and residents, and the various linguistic groups that coexist in this bilingual city.
The festival opens with a solemn procession into the old town: trumpeters, bands, and groups in traditional dress parade together to Piazza Duomo, where the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Altstadtfest Committee takes place, effectively making them the masters of the historic center for three days. On Sunday evening, the event concludes with the traditional Altstadtfest Committee torchlight procession, one of the most evocative and anticipated moments.
Over the three days, the program alternates concerts, live music, South Tyrolean folk entertainment, and folklore-inspired theatrical performances. The associations' stalls offer a rich selection of local gastronomy, featuring South Tyrolean specialties, traditional dishes, and local products, all set against the convivial atmosphere of the central squares.
Born in the late nineties and now boasting numerous editions, the Altstadtfest has become a symbol of the Bressanone summer and an opportunity to rediscover the soul of the city's historic center. The city, an important hub in South Tyrol at the confluence of the Isarco and Rienza rivers, offers the best of its hospitality during these days: those who visit the Altstadtfest discover not just a village fair, but an entire historic center telling its story through its associations, music, and traditions.
The 24th edition of the Altstadtfest Brixen is scheduled from Friday, August 21 to Sunday, August 23, 2026, in the historic center of Bressanone (province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige). As per the biennial tradition, the squares and streets of the old town will host the major folk festival animated by over thirty local associations for three days.
The event will open on Friday afternoon with the entrance procession—trumpeters, bands, and groups in traditional costume heading to Piazza Duomo—and the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Committee. On Saturday and Sunday, the historic center will be enlivened by live music, South Tyrolean folk entertainment, shows, and food stalls, with activities dedicated to children and families. On Sunday evening, the festival will conclude with the traditional torchlight procession.
Approximate hours: Friday from 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM, Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM, Sunday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The full program with times, concerts, and artists will be announced by the Altstadtfest Committee on the official website in the weeks preceding the event.
Bressanone/Brixen is easily accessible by train: the station is served by connections along the Brenner axis (Verona-Bolzano-Innsbruck line). By car, take the A22 Brenner motorway and exit at Bressanone. The festival takes place in the pedestrianized historic center: it is recommended to leave your car in the parking structures on the outskirts of the center.
Access to the festival in the squares and streets of the center is free. Approximate hours: Friday from 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM, Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM, Sunday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Food and drinks at the association stalls are available for purchase.
As this is a very popular event, it is recommended to book accommodation in Bressanone and the surrounding area well in advance. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for the historic center's cobblestones.
