Hiking and Nordic walking through disused quarries, abandoned churches, and giant benches in the Monferrato hills
The Alfiano Natta Trekking is one of the most beloved and anticipated excursions in the winter calendar of the Cammini DiVini association, a group that has spent years promoting slow travel and the discovery of the Piedmont region. The event takes place in the Municipality of Alfiano Natta, a small village in the Province of Alessandria nestled in the gentle hills of the Casale Monferrato area, in Piedmont. It is located in a border area between Monferrato and the Asti region, where the hilly landscape offers some of the most evocative views in the region.
The circular route covers approximately 10 kilometers with a total elevation gain of about 300 meters and an estimated duration of three hours: an accessible itinerary suitable for walkers of all levels, and ideal for those who practice Nordic walking. The walk starts from the town center, descends into the open countryside, and climbs back up to the Castello di Razzano, home to the famous giant bench number 148, part of the Big Bench circuit that dots the hills of Piedmont.
More than just a simple excursion, the Alfiano Natta Trekking is a social gathering: upon arrival, participants are welcomed by the unmissable aperitif at Bar del Gatto, accompanied by sweets prepared by the local villagers. Over the years, the event has enjoyed growing success, attracting over seventy hikers per edition, a testament to the deep bond between the association and the local community.
The initiative is curated by Cammini DiVini under the guidance of GAE Augusto Cavallo, an environmental hiking guide who accompanies participants along the entire loop. The trek showcases a heritage made of rural traditions, industrial archaeology (the disused quarries), minor religious architecture, and art scattered throughout the landscape, offering visitors the authentic identity of Monferrato, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a slow and conscious way to experience the Piedmontese territory, blending nature, culture, and good company.
On Sunday, March 1, 2026, Cammini DiVini, in collaboration with Bar del Gatto, hosted another edition of the Alfiano Natta Trekking.
