About Albori Living Nativity

Between Christmas and Epiphany, the village of Albori—a hillside hamlet of Vietri sul Mare in the province of Salerno—transforms into a grand open-air living nativity. Along narrow alleys, stairways, and courtyards, visitors encounter Nativity scenes, taverns, artisan workshops, and costumed actors, while food stalls offer the flavors of the Amalfi Coast. Now in its 46th edition, this free event beautifully blends popular faith, tradition, and landscape.

A living nativity suspended over the Amalfi Coast

In Albori, a small hillside hamlet in the Municipality of Vietri sul Mare, in the province of Salerno, Christmas still retains an ancient charm. For several evenings between December and January, the houses clinging to the mountainside, the narrow alleys, and the stairways overlooking the gulf become the natural backdrop for one of the longest-running and most beloved living nativity scenes in Campania. There is no need to build a set: the village itself, with its stone walls and courtyards, is the perfect stage for the re-enactment of the Nativity.

Nearly half a century of Vietri tradition

The event is the longest-running in the Christmas calendar of Vietri sul Mare, reaching its 46th edition in the 2025-2026 season. It is promoted by the Santa Margherita V. M. Parish in Albori and the Associazione Albori 2000, with the patronage of the Municipality of Vietri sul Mare as part of the «Natale a Vietri» program. It is a collective effort involving much of the small Albori community: actors, artisans, cooks, and volunteers who recreate the same story with the same care every year.

The scenes and the route

Visitors traverse the village along a path of living scenes that reconstruct the atmosphere of Palestine at the time of Jesus. Between one alley and another, you will find taverns, artisan workshops, and costumed actors, while itinerant performances and entertainment designed for both adults and children accompany the journey: past editions have even featured fire-eaters, a favorite among children. The effect is one of suspended time, where the spiritual dimension of the nativity scene intertwines with the daily life of the village.

  • Nativity scenes set up among the village's alleys, stairways, and courtyards
  • Taverns, artisan workshops, and costumed actors
  • Itinerant performances and family entertainment
  • Demonstration and food stalls along the route

Local flavors

Alongside the scenes, food stalls offer tastings of typical local products, with special attention to those with specific dietary needs: in the 2025-2026 edition, gluten-free and lactose-free options were provided by Igloo Salerno. It is the perfect opportunity to sample the flavors of the Amalfi Coast in a much more intimate setting than the large summer events.

Albori, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy

Albori is a handful of colorful houses suspended above the sea, recently recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The municipal seat, Vietri sul Mare, is world-famous for its ceramics and is considered the gateway to the Amalfi Coast: visiting the living nativity means discovering one of the most photogenic corners of the province of Salerno, off-season and away from the summer crowds.

Hours and admission

Tips

Comfortable shoes are recommended, as the route winds through sloping stairways and alleys, as well as warm clothing: winter evenings in the hills can be cold and windy. Dates may change in case of bad weather, as has happened in the past: it is advisable to check for updates on the nativity scene's Facebook page before setting off.
