Albanella, the Town of Music: two nights of live performances between the historic center and the Matinella district
The Albanella Music Festival is the local interpretation of the great European music celebration held on June 21st, brought for the first time in 2026 to this town in the province of Salerno, nestled between the Sele Plain and the rolling hills of Cilento, in Campania. It is promoted by the Pro Loco Albanella APS, which chose music as a key to narrate the town and build a recognizable identity, summarized in a slogan that has become a true local hallmark: "Albanella, Town of Music."
This is not merely a concert series or a singing competition. The organizers openly describe it as a tool for social cohesion, designed to address the challenges and contradictions of contemporary society by placing art, connection, and participation at the center. The project is coordinated by a dedicated working group, with artistic direction by maestro Ivano De Simone, presidency by Mimmo Santoro, and secretariat by Giovanni Croce.
The heart of the event consists of two consecutive nights involving the two souls of the municipal territory. The first takes place in Albanella, in Piazza Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto; the second in the Matinella district, in Piazza Martiri del Lavoro. In both cases, the formula remains the same: an open-air stage from late afternoon until late evening, bands and artists of various genres taking turns, a food area set up in the square, and free admission for everyone.
The choice to split the festival reflects the geography of the municipality, divided between the hilltop village and the lowland district: this way, both communities experience the event right on their doorstep, making it a true town-wide celebration.
The two nights in June do not emerge from a vacuum: they are the culmination of a lead-up journey that the Pro Loco has dubbed «Spring Notes» (Note di Primavera). For weeks, on Sunday afternoons starting at 6:30 PM, participating bars in Albanella and Matinella transformed into small, diffused stages, hosting live musical performances, talk shows, and poetry readings.
The stages featured, among others, the young singer from Salerno, Michele Ricciardi, with his show «Time Travel», Lello Oppo and Maurizio Capuano of the group Mysotis, the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Quant!co, and DJ Domenico Di Lucia, known as DDL, alongside local writers.
Behind the festival lies a precise conviction: that Albanella already possesses the necessary human resources at home. The town boasts several dance and music schools and a middle school with a musical curriculum—a wealth of young people and teachers that the event showcases rather than leaving confined to rehearsal rooms. The Music Festival thus becomes an opportunity for visibility for young instrumentalists and local associations, while simultaneously providing another reason to bring people out into the squares on summer evenings.
Membership in the national Festa della Musica Italia network, which ignites thousands of events across the peninsula on June 21st, also places the small Cilento town within a much broader circuit, shared with hundreds of other Italian towns and cities.
Those arriving for the concerts find themselves in a corner of Campania that deserves a few extra days. Albanella dominates the Sele Plain from above, with a compact historic center and a panorama that, on clear days, reaches the sea. A few kilometers away lie the Greek temples of Paestum, while the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park begins toward the interior. The local cuisine follows the same logic: buffalo mozzarella from the plain, olive oil, vegetables, and Cilento-style cooking, recognized as one of the roots of the Mediterranean diet.
The event is held consistently around June 21st, the European Music Day, with evenings hosted in the main squares of Albanella and Matinella. Admission is free: simply show up in the square. For the detailed program, usually released shortly before the event, refer to the social media channels of the Pro Loco Albanella APS and the national Music Festival portal.
2026 marks Albanella's debut in the national Music Festival network. The Pro Loco Albanella APS, led by Mimmo Santoro, built the inaugural edition around a simple idea: using music as a driver of cohesion and as a new identity marker for the town in the province of Salerno.
The two concluding evenings, Saturday, June 20th in Albanella and Sunday, June 21st in the Matinella district, took place outdoors from 6:00 PM to 11:30 PM, with bands and artists of different genres taking turns on stage and a food area accompanying the public throughout the evening. Admission was free in both squares.
Before the grand finale, the «Spring Notes» series had brought music, poetry, and talk shows to the bars of Albanella and Matinella for weeks, on Sunday afternoons starting at 6:30 PM: a long itinerant journey that brought out local talent, from local dance and music schools to students of the middle school with a musical curriculum.
The official lineup for the two final evenings was not released online by the organizers.
Albanella evening: Piazza Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, in the town center. Matinella evening: Piazza Martiri del Lavoro, in the lowland district, a few kilometers from the municipal seat.
Admission to the evening events in the squares is free. A food area with paid refreshments is set up in the festival areas. Parking is available on the streets adjacent to the squares: it is advisable to arrive a little early before the concerts begin.
The evenings last until late: a light sweater is useful even in June, especially in Albanella, which is higher and windier than the district. Those who want to combine the festival with a visit can stay at accommodation facilities between Paestum and Capaccio, about twenty minutes away by car.
