Otranto's New Year's Eve, the first light of Italy
Alba dei Popoli (Dawn of the Peoples) is the signature end-of-year event in Otranto, located in the heart of Salento in the province of Lecce. Otranto is Italy's easternmost town: here, the new year's light touches the peninsula first. This evocative fact defines the festival's identity, which since 1999 has transformed Otranto's New Year into a collective ritual of hospitality and cultural exchange, reaching its 27th edition in 2026.
More than just a New Year's Eve party, Alba dei Popoli is a vibrant hub of events spanning multiple generations. The program, unfolding over several days between late December and January 1st, weaves together live music, culture, spirituality, and Salento's folk traditions. Concerts animate the city's most iconic spaces: the Aragonese Castle, Largo Porta Terra, and, on the morning of New Year's Day, the Spiaggia dei Gradoni along the Kennedy seafront.
The most anticipated moment is the turn of the year: on the night of December 31st, Largo Porta Terra comes alive with folk music featuring the great voices of Salento tradition, while DJ sets continue late into the night at the Castle. At dawn on January 1st, as Otranto witnesses the first light of Italy, the public gathers on the Spiaggia dei Gradoni for the traditional Sunrise Coffee, a dawn concert accompanied by hot coffee, welcoming the new year with jazz, soul, and pop.
True to its name, Alba dei Popoli dedicates significant space to cultural exchange and spirituality, featuring interfaith dialogue and candlelight concerts within the Aragonese Castle. The festival also offers activities for children, markets, and street performances throughout the historic center, a UNESCO-recognized site famous for its Cathedral and the Tree of Life mosaic.
Organized by the Municipality of Otranto, Alba dei Popoli is promoted as one of the most original end-of-year tourism experiences in Pugliaโa distinctive feature that no other Italian location can claim. The event attracts visitors from across Puglia and Italy, all eager to start the year in the place where the sun rises first.
For its 27th edition, Alba dei Popoli brought Otranto to life from December 27, 2025, to January 1, 2026, with a program weaving together culture, music, and local heritage. Organized by the Municipality of Otranto in collaboration with the Lecce Chamber of Commerce, the festival featured concerts, interfaith dialogue, activities for children, and street performances in the historic center.
On New Year's Eve, Largo Porta Terra hosted a DJ set by Tobia Lamare & La Pupa and a concert by Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, while after midnight, the Aragonese Castle welcomed a DJ set by Mike Joyce, the legendary drummer of The Smiths. At dawn on January 1st, the traditional Sunrise Coffee on the Spiaggia dei Gradoni featured Raphael Gualazzi and his quintet, greeting the first light of the new year in Italy.
By car: From Lecce, take the SS16 road to Otranto (approx. 45 km). During the festival, the historic center is pedestrianized; we recommend using the parking lots outside the town walls.
By train: The Otranto station is connected via the Ferrovie del Sud Est network; the main regional hubs are Lecce and Maglie.
By plane: The nearest airport is Brindisi (approx. 90 km), followed by Bari.
Events in public squares and spaces are generally free of charge. For the detailed program, schedules, and any booking requirements, please refer to the official channels of the Municipality of Otranto.
