The symbolic birth of the city at the summer solstice, featuring the dawn ritual on the Acropolis and cultural events
In the heart of the Ciociaria region, in the province of Frosinone, Alatri celebrates its "Christmas" every year: not a winter holiday, but the symbolic birth of the city at the summer solstice. According to tradition, as explored in the studies of Don Giuseppe Capone, the ancient city of the Hernici was designed with almost millimetric precision to align with the first ray of sun on June 21st. Hence the idea that the longest day of the year coincides with the city's "birthday".
The most anticipated moment is the ascent to the Acropolis of Civita, the majestic ring of megalithic walls in polygonal masonry that overlooks the town. At dawn on June 21st, citizens and visitors gather to watch the first ray of sun illuminate the north-east corner of the eastern wall: a natural and symbolic spectacle that blends archaeology, astronomy, and collective memory. The magic of the sunrise is often accompanied by live music and a shared breakfast at the summit.
Surrounding the solar ritual, the Municipality of Alatri organizes several days of events in the city's iconic spaces: squares, cloisters, and cultural venues. The festival weaves together book presentations on local history, exhibition openings, meetings on archaeological heritage protection, concerts, and contemporary dance performances, including the FUTUROROMA Festival's Alatri stop and performances by the City of Alatri Band.
Alatri is one of the most fascinating destinations in inland Lazio: its cyclopean walls are among the best-preserved in Italy and attract scholars and curious visitors from all over the world. The Alatri Christmas thus becomes an opportunity to rediscover the city's megalithic soul, its deep connection with the sky and the sun, and to experience the historic center in a festive atmosphere. A free event, rooted in Ciociarian identity and open to anyone wishing to discover an authentic corner of the Lazio region.
From June 20th to 24th, 2026, Alatri celebrated its "Christmas" with days dedicated to culture, music, and performance in the city's iconic spaces. The heart of the event was the dawn ritual on June 21st on the Acropolis, awaiting the first ray of sun of the summer solstice.
Alatri is located in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria (Lazio). By car: A1 motorway, Frosinone exit, then SR155 towards Alatri. By train: Frosinone station, followed by bus connections to Alatri. The journey from Rome takes about an hour and a half.
Events for the Alatri Christmas are free of charge. The dawn ritual on the Acropolis takes place at sunrise on June 21st (meeting around 6:00 AM). Comfortable clothing is recommended for the climb to the Acropolis.
