Alatri Christmas: the city's birth at sunrise

According to tradition, as explored in the studies of Don Giuseppe Capone, the ancient city of the Hernici was designed with almost millimetric precision to align with the first ray of sun on June 21st. Hence the idea that the longest day of the year coincides with the city's "birthday".

The dawn ritual on the Acropolis

The most anticipated moment is the ascent to the Acropolis of Civita, the majestic ring of megalithic walls in polygonal masonry that overlooks the town. At dawn on June 21st, citizens and visitors gather to watch the first ray of sun illuminate the north-east corner of the eastern wall: a natural and symbolic spectacle that blends archaeology, astronomy, and collective memory. The magic of the sunrise is often accompanied by live music and a shared breakfast at the summit.

Surrounding the solar ritual, the Municipality of Alatri organizes several days of events in the city's iconic spaces: squares, cloisters, and cultural venues. The festival weaves together book presentations on local history, exhibition openings, meetings on archaeological heritage protection, concerts, and contemporary dance performances, including the FUTUROROMA Festival's Alatri stop and performances by the City of Alatri Band.
