History, art, faith, and local excellence in the heart of Alatri
Alatri al Centro is an initiative promoted by the Municipality of Alatri, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio), to refocus attention on the city's historic center and its many treasures. Born as a regional development project, the event changes its theme each year while maintaining a clear common thread: placing the community, heritage, and local small-to-medium enterprises at the heart of the experience. The initiative is supported by the Frosinone Latina Chamber of Commerce and is sponsored by CNA and FENAPI.
The 2026 edition takes place over the weekend of May 1st and 2nd, transforming the historic center into an immersive journey through culture and spirituality. Friday is dedicated to free guided tours, led by the Cicerone Tourist Guides, who will accompany citizens and visitors in discovering the city's treasures: the morning is spent «in search of the Cyclopes» along the ancient defensive walls, while the afternoon is reserved for the «Art and Faith» route, exploring miracles and labyrinths. The day concludes with a concert at the Municipal Library.
The symbolic heart of the event lies in the monuments that make Alatri famous throughout Italy. The megalithic (or Cyclopean) walls of the acropolis, among the best-preserved in the Mediterranean, bear witness to the city's ancient origins. In the Cloister of San Francesco, located in Piazza Regina Margherita, lies the mysterious Christ of the Labyrinth, a rare fresco that can be visited for free during the event. These sites tell a story spanning over two thousand years, making Alatri one of the most fascinating cultural destinations in the Ciociaria region.
Alongside the cultural dimension, Alatri al Centro dedicates ample space to gastronomic excellence and local businesses. The project supports local producers and activities with training courses on agroecology and the promotion of typical products, concluding with the awarding of certificates and a free tasting open to the public. It is a unique opportunity to savor the authentic flavors of the Frosinone area and meet the people who produce them.
Directed by the Municipality of Alatri and involving associations, guides, and institutions, the event confirms the city's vocation for building networks around its heritage. It is an appointment designed for residents but capable of attracting visitors, who will find in Alatri a concentrated blend of history, faith, art, and fine dining in southern Lazio.
