The Walser Carnival and its solidarity soup in Piazza Grober
Nestled at over 1,150 meters above sea level at the foot of the Valsesian side of Monte Rosa, Alagna Valsesia is one of the most fascinating Walser villages in Piedmont, in the Province of Vercelli. Here, where wood and stone architecture and ancient German-speaking traditions tell centuries of mountain history, the Carnival is no ordinary festival: it is a community ritual that culminates on Shrove Tuesday with the famous Paniccia.
The Paniccia is the beating heart of the Alagna Carnival. It is a thick soup made of rice, vegetables, and meat — carrots, celery, onions, cabbage, leeks, beans, potatoes, bacon, minced meat, tomato, and bread — cooked for hours in massive cauldrons. Its origins are rooted in a centuries-old tradition common throughout the Valsesia valley: according to local lore, the Paniccia was once prepared to feed the prisoners of the Varallo jails and the local poor. From this act of charity comes the rule that still makes this festival unique today: the distribution is free and the Paniccia is offered to anyone who arrives with their own pot, in the spirit of solidarity that has always inspired the valley's inhabitants.
The Alagna Carnival takes place over two days. Monday is dedicated to preparations and the little ones: early in the morning, vegetables are cleaned and the long cooking process of the Paniccia begins in the kindergarten kitchen, while in the afternoon, children take center stage with games, prizes, and a snack at the Unione Alagnese.
Shrove Tuesday is the main event: at noon, in Piazza Grober, the long-awaited distribution of the Paniccia begins. The festival continues with community lunch and dinner, a convivial gathering for the whole village, and a raffle at the Teatro Unione Alagnese. The day ends on a high note with an evening dance party at the Unione Alagnese, filled with masks, music, and dancing.
Far from large commercial carnivals, the one in Alagna preserves a genuine and participatory soul. It is a precious opportunity to discover Walser culture, savor traditional dishes, and experience the warm, welcoming atmosphere of an alpine community that, even in the heart of the Valsesian winter, knows how to celebrate around a steaming pot. For visitors, it is also the best way to get to know an authentic corner of Piedmont, between the peaks of Monte Rosa and the stone roofs of a village that has managed to safeguard its own identity.
The 2026 Alagna Valsesia Carnival was spread over two days. Monday, February 16, from 9:00 AM, vegetable cleaning and the start of the Paniccia cooking in the kindergarten kitchen; at 3:00 PM, children's games with prizes and a snack at the Unione Alagnese.
Tuesday, February 17, from 12:00 PM, distribution of the Paniccia in Piazza Grober; lunch at 1:00 PM and dinner at 8:30 PM at the Dir Und Don (by reservation). In the afternoon, a raffle at the Teatro Unione Alagnese and, at 9:30 PM, a dance party at the Unione Alagnese.
