Italy's highest winter motorcycle rally in Pontechianale
Agnellotreffen is a winter motorcycle gathering held every January in Pontechianale, nestled in the stunning Varaita Valley, in the province of Cuneo (Piedmont). Known as the highest winter motorcycle rally in Italy, it attracts hundreds of enthusiasts each year, all ready to brave the snow, ice, and winding mountain roads to experience something truly unique in the shadow of Monviso.
The heart of the event beats in the alpine village of Chianale, a hamlet of Pontechianale and one of Italy's most beautiful villages, accessible in winter up to 1,800 meters. Riders arrive here from across Italy and various European countries, turning the snow-covered roads into a river of bikes, headlights, and flags. The atmosphere is that of a classic rally: tents pitched in the snow, massive bonfires, steaming mulled wine, music, and toasts under the starry mountain sky.
The most anticipated moment is the night-time motorcycle parade, which starts from the village of Chianale and leads participants back to Pontechianale: a snake of lights cutting through the dark valley is one of the most photographed spectacles of the event. A photo in front of the Frozen Biker statue—a playful and affectionate symbol for those who face the rally in the harsh alpine winter temperatures—is an absolute must.
Beyond the bikes, Agnellotreffen is a celebration of the local area. Throughout the day, exhibition stands featuring industry specialists and local products are set up, while the food area serves traditional Cuneo dishes designed to warm up cold riders. The event is organized by Moto Raid Experience, a tour operator from Saluzzo, with the support of the Municipality of Pontechianale and the Cuneo Tourism Board (ATL), relying largely on the dedication of a volunteer staff.
Born in 2014 from the idea of a small group of friends, Agnellotreffen has grown edition after edition to exceed 1,600 participants, becoming one of the most beloved winter events for the two-wheeled world in the Province of Cuneo and across Piedmont. The name refers to the nearby Colle dell'Agnello, an alpine pass between Italy and France that is a summer destination for motorcyclists who, in winter, find the same spirit of adventure here.
Pontechianale and the village of Chianale can be reached by car or motorcycle by traveling up the Varaita Valley along the SP8 road from Saluzzo, in the province of Cuneo. In winter, winter tires or snow chains are mandatory: the road is subject to snow and ice.
The event takes place in mid-January, spanning three days (Friday to Sunday).
Wear warm, waterproof technical winter clothing and suitable gloves, and be cautious on snow-covered road surfaces. Early registration via the official website is recommended to receive the welcome kit. Accommodation in the area is limited: book well in advance or bring a tent.
