The ancient spring fair that heralds Holy Week in Maglie

In the heart of Salento, in Maglie (Lecce province), the Addolorata Fair—universally known as the Bell Fair—has marked the beginning of Holy Week for over a century and a half. Held annually on the Friday preceding Palm Sunday along Viale della Madonna Addolorata and Piazza Tamborino, it transforms this corner of the city into a vibrant open-air market bustling with locals, curious visitors, and pilgrims.
The fair’s uniqueness lies in its wares: beyond the usual sweets, nuts, and festive toys, the stalls are filled with bells, tiny bells, and whistles, all strictly made of colorful terracotta in every imaginable shape and size. Alongside these, you will find traditional trozzule—handcrafted wooden instruments used to create noise during celebrations, mimicking the sound of fireworks—and panari, the typical Salento baskets. It is a triumph of folk craftsmanship that preserves a rare glimpse into a bygone rural and devotional world.
The fair was established by royal decree in 1860, but its roots reach back to much older devotional practices. The sound of bells and whistles echoes the custom of children who, on Holy Thursday, would make noise during the days when church bells remained silent in mourning, leading up to the joy of Easter Sunday. These colorful whistles, once a popular gift for young girls, were kept as decorative items and even used as table settings on Easter day.
The fair is held in honor of the Madonna Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows) and serves as the symbolic opening of the Holy Week rites in Maglie. The bond between the market and the Addolorata sanctuary is profound: the event is simultaneously a moment of faith, a social gathering, and a spring festival where the community pours into the streets to renew a ritual passed down through generations.
Located halfway between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, Maglie is one of the main hubs of lower Salento and a lively commercial crossroads in the province of Lecce. Visiting the Bell Fair is also an opportunity to discover its elegant historic center, 19th-century palaces, and the authentic atmosphere of a city that has made its fair tradition a defining part of its identity.
