A child-friendly carnival in the alleys of Acquasparta
In Acquasparta, a small municipality in the province of Terni in the heart of Umbria, carnival is not a party for disguised adults: it is an event designed, built, and dedicated entirely to children. For about thirty years, the Children's Carnival has enlivened February Sundays with its grand parade of allegorical floats that cross the historic center of the village.
The heart of the festival is the grand parade of allegorical floats inspired by the cartoon characters most loved by children. Alongside the main floats, there are also smaller vehicles built specifically for children โ such as the train, the carriage, the caterpillar, the spinning teacups, and the queen of the sea. During the passage of the floats, balloons, plush toys, and candies are thrown to the public, in a festive atmosphere that involves entire families.
Accompanying the floats along the streets of Acquasparta are folk groups, musical bands, majorettes, and orchestras, which transform every Sunday into a day of color and joy. Admission is free, and ample parking is available for those arriving by car near the Fonti Amerino.
Now in its thirtieth edition, the Children's Carnival is one of the most keenly felt events in the calendar of Acquasparta and the entire Terni area. Organized by the local Committee with the support of the community, it represents one of those village festivals where volunteers patiently build the floats in the preceding months, keeping alive a tradition that is renewed year after year.
For 2026, the Acquasparta Children's Carnival celebrates its 30th edition. The event takes place on the main Sundays of February, with the first parade scheduled for February 1st. The allegorical floats start in the afternoon, around 2:30 PM, and cross the historic center amidst confetti, gadget throws, and music.
In case of bad weather, a recovery date is planned for the following weeks. The thirtieth-anniversary edition confirms the proven formula: a grand parade, cartoon-themed floats, custom vehicles for children, and musical accompaniment by bands and majorettes.
In case of bad weather, a recovery Sunday is planned. Final dates and times are confirmed by the Committee on official channels in the weeks preceding the event.
Acquasparta can be reached from the SS3 Flaminia or the E45; Acquasparta train station is on the Terni-Perugia line (Ferrovia Centrale Umbra).
Ample parking is available near the Fonti Amerino.
Free.
During the carnival period, a tavern with typical Umbrian dishes is open.
