The Creative Ideas Fair at Fiera di Roma
Abilmente Rome is the capital city stop of the Abilmente circuit, the creative ideas fair organized by the Italian Exhibition Group. Every autumn, the event arrives at the Fiera di Roma, located in the Portuense district of the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the Lazio region, transforming the halls into a large, immersive workshop where you can touch, try, learn, and shop. It is one of Italy's leading events in the hobby and creative sector, attracting an audience from across Central Italy.
The exhibition path brings together hundreds of companies, artisans, and small creative businesses presenting materials, yarns, fabrics, papers, tools, and kits. The thematic areas cover the major branches of manual creativity:
Alongside the stands, there are special paths that give the event its identity every year, such as La Via delle Idee (The Path of Ideas), dedicated to the most original proposals in the creative landscape, and Arti di Filo (Thread Arts), which brings together embroidery, crochet, and textile work in a monographic area much loved by the Roman public.
The heart of Abilmente is not just commercial: a large part of the day is spent at the tables of courses and workshops, led by teachers, designers, and creators. These range from short amigurumi lessons to sewing demonstrations, and from calligraphy trials to decoration workshops. Sessions have limited capacity and in many cases can be booked in advance online or directly at the fair, subject to availability.
A specific space is reserved for families with the Family Lab, an area designed to let adults and children work together on simple, guided manual activities. There are also themed exhibitions, often created with collective knitting and crochet works sent in by enthusiasts from all over Italy.
In recent years, the event has seen a strong resurgence of textile arts: embroidery, knitting, crochet, and natural dyeing are among the most sought-after techniques, along with visible mending, the art of repairing garments in a way that turns the tear into a decorative element. The young audience is also growing, viewing DIY not just as a hobby but as a potential professional activity, with workshops dedicated to selling, communication, and photographing one's products.
For those living in Rome and the Lazio region, Abilmente is the annual opportunity to find materials in one place that are hard to source in shops, engage with artisans, and fill your bag with ideas before the Christmas season. For those arriving from further away, the Fiera di Roma is easily accessible by train and car, allowing you to combine your visit with a day in the city. We recommend dedicating at least half a day to your visit: between courses, demonstrations, and stands, time passes much faster than you might imagine.
The Roman stop of Abilmente Autumn 2026 opens its doors at the Fiera di Roma from September 24 to 27, the first appointment of a tour that will then continue to Vicenza (October 15-18), Milan (October 22-25), and Turin (November 12-15). The edition promises to focus on the return of textile arts, with embroidery, knitting, crochet, and natural dyeing among the most requested techniques, along with visible mending and paper crafts such as calligraphy, lettering, and scrapbooking.
The areas that characterize the event are confirmed, from La Via delle Idee to Arti di Filo, as well as the space dedicated to families. The detailed program of courses and workshops will be published by the organization in the weeks preceding the opening on the official website abilmente.org, where you can also book limited-capacity lessons.
