The nativity art exhibition in the medieval village of Ostia Antica
"A Nativity Scene in the Village" (also known as "Nativity Scenes in the Village") is a nativity art exhibition that brings the charming medieval village of Ostia Antica, in Rome's 10th Municipality, to life every Christmas season. The display is located at Piazza Ravenna 4, just a short walk from the Castle of Julius II and the Basilica of Sant'Aurea, in the heart of one of the most fascinating corners of the Roman coast.
The artistic nativity scene is the result of the passion and talent of artist Tommaso Ghiglione, who has generously shared his work with the public for years. The diorama reconstructs a late 19th-century village on a market day: among the narrow streets, one can spot artisan workshops, an old carpentry shop, a shoemaker's stall, a vintage cellar, a bakery with its loaves of bread, and a butcher's shop. Some scenic views are inspired by the watercolors from the famous "Vanishing Rome" collection by Ettore Roesler Franz, which documented the popular Rome that disappeared between the 19th and 20th centuries. The work has been awarded as the best diorama in a local nativity competition.
For over a decade, this exhibition has been one of the most cherished events for the Ostia Antica community. The nativity scene is part of the great Italian tradition of nativity art, a popular heritage that renews the bond between faith, memory, and the village's identity every Christmas. The visit is designed for the whole family: both adults and children can linger over the minute details of the scenes, among ancient trades, landscapes, and figures that tell the story of daily life in times past.
The initiative has a heart of solidarity: admission is free, but the exhibition promotes a fundraiser for the Agesci Ostia Antica 1 Scout Group, a local educational organization. The event is supported by the Pro Loco of Ostia Antica and volunteers who bring the square to life throughout the holidays, alongside other Christmas offerings in the village.
Visiting the nativity scene is also an opportunity to discover the village of Ostia Antica, a jewel just a stone's throw from the famous archaeological site of the Ostia Antica excavations. The small settlement, gathered around the Renaissance castle, offers an intimate and authentic atmosphere, particularly evocative under the Christmas lights.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Piazza Ravenna 4, in the village of Ostia Antica. After the opening, it was also open on Monday, December 8 (Immaculate Conception) and every weekend during the Christmas period, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, until January 6, 2026, the day of the Epiphany. Admission was free.
Once again this year, Tommaso Ghiglione's diorama recreated the ancient late 19th-century village on a market day, with its workshops, trades, and views inspired by "Vanishing Rome." The initiative supported a fundraiser for the Agesci Ostia Antica 1 Scout Group.
