The grand, solemn pilgrimage of the 'Black Feathers' across the glaciers of the White War, culminating in a final ceremony in Storo.
The Adamello Pilgrimage is the most important and solemn commemoration through which the Alpine community honors the memory of the fallen of the First World War, who fought on the peaks and glaciers of the Adamello in what history remembers as the White War, the highest-altitude conflict in Europe. Organized annually by the National Alpini Association (ANA) sections of Trento and Vallecamonica, the pilgrimage draws active and retired Alpini, as well as ANA groups and sections from all over Italy and abroad, creating an event of great international significance.
For the 62nd edition, dedicated to Alpino Rodolfo Beretta, the event spans several days. Starting on July 23, 2026, various columns of pilgrims will set out from different points in the Chiese and Rendena Valleys and the Vallecamonica, crossing mountain huts, passes, and high-altitude trails such as the Carè Alto hut, the Caduti dell'Adamello hut, the Val di Fumo hut, and Val Genova. The columns will converge on Saturday, July 25, at the former military cemetery of Clef, above Storo, where a cemetery was in use during the First World War: here, around noon, a field Mass will be celebrated in suffrage for those who sacrificed their lives in the mountains.
The event concludes on Sunday, July 26, in the municipality of Storo, in the Province of Trento, with a grand parade of participants through the town streets, honors to the fallen, and official speeches with the participation of civil, military, and national and local political authorities. The day ends with the traditional community meal, prepared with the collaboration of the Nu.Vol.A. volunteers. The Storo Alpini Group, led by group leader Enzo Giacomolli, oversees the local hospitality and organization of the event.
The Adamello Pilgrimage has its roots in the early 1960s, when the 'Black Feathers' began to climb in large numbers to the sites of the White War to ensure the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers is never forgotten. Since then, the final ceremony has rotated year by year between the towns on the Trentino side and those on the Camonica side, uniting the mountain communities of the two provinces: in 2025, the closing ceremony was held in Ponte di Legno, while in 2026, it is Storo and the Chiese Valley's turn to host the final moment.
A free event open to all, blending historical memory, spirituality, mountain culture, and Alpine friendship in the municipality of Storo, Trentino-Alto Adige.
The ANA sections of Trento and Vallecamonica are organizing the 62nd Adamello Pilgrimage from July 23 to 26, 2026, dedicated to Alpino Rodolfo Beretta, with the final ceremony in the municipality of Storo.
Starting July 23, eight columns of pilgrims will depart from various points in the Chiese and Rendena Valleys and the Vallecamonica, traversing high-altitude mountain huts and passes (Carè Alto, Caduti dell'Adamello, Val di Fumo, Val Genova). Saturday, July 25, all columns will converge around 12:00 PM at the former military cemetery of Clef, above Storo, for the field Mass in suffrage for the fallen.
Sunday, July 26, the event concludes in Storo with the parade of participants, official speeches by civil, military, and political authorities, and the traditional community meal prepared by the Nu.Vol.A. volunteers.
Storo is located in the Chiese Valley, in southwestern Trentino, near the border with Lombardy. By car, it can be reached via the SS237 del Caffaro; the most convenient motorway exit is Rovereto Sud on the A22 (Brenner Motorway), continuing towards the Chiese Valley, or Brescia Est on the A4, traveling up through the Sabbia Valley and Lake Idro.
The field Mass on Saturday, July 25, takes place at the former military cemetery of Clef, which can only be reached on foot via long, high-mountain climbs reserved for columns of properly equipped pilgrims (harnesses, crampons, and helmets are required for some columns). The final ceremony on Sunday, July 26, is held in the center of Storo and is accessible to everyone.
