Conference and tastings to mark sixty years of the Maremma tuff wine appellation
On June 20, 2026, Pitigliano, a stunning tuff stone village in the Grosseto Maremma, celebrates a major milestone: the 60th anniversary of the Bianco di Pitigliano DOC. Recognized in 1966, this designation is one of the oldest in Italian oenological history and represents one of the most iconic expressions of Tuscan white wine. The initiative is promoted by the Consorzio di Tutela DOC Bianco di Pitigliano e Sovana, in collaboration with the Cantina Cooperativa di Pitigliano and the Associazione Cantine nel Tufo.
The day begins at 11:00 AM at the Cantina Cooperativa di Pitigliano with the conference '60 Years of the Bianco di Pitigliano DOC โ A Millennial Heritage Looking to the Future'. Following institutional greetings from Pitigliano Mayor Giovanni Gentili and Cantina President Paolo Spicci, and moderated by journalist Paolo Mastracca, a series of prominent scholars and experts will speak:
The conclusions will be presented by Edoardo Ventimiglia, Vice President of the Consortium, and Stefano Formiconi, President of the Consortium. The debate will cover topics ranging from sustainability and climate change to the promotion of quality production and regional development.
At 6:00 PM, the festivities move to the heart of the village in Piazza della Fortezza Orsini for the 'Pitigliano DOC' event, open to the public. Organized by the Associazione Cantine nel Tufo, the tasting offers a chance to discover and sample various interpretations of a wine with ancient roots. Bianco di Pitigliano is crafted from Trebbiano Toscano, blended with varieties such as Greco, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, and Verdello, and is available in still, sparkling, and Superiore versions.
Pitigliano stands on a tuff spur in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany, and together with Sovana and Sorano, it is one of the famous 'tuff villages' of the Maremma, surrounded by evocative Etruscan vie cave (sunken roads). Also known as 'Little Jerusalem' due to its historic Jewish community, Pitigliano is a destination that combines landscape, archaeology, and a millennial wine culture. The cellars carved directly into the tuff, cool and humid, provide the ideal environment for aging the local white wines.
An event designed for both wine enthusiasts and casual visitors: the morning is dedicated to scientific and historical insight, while the evening offers a convivial gathering at the tasting stands. A celebration that recounts sixty years of a designation capable of blending tradition and innovation, set against the backdrop of one of the most fascinating villages in the Maremma.
