The hard-boiled egg challenge that fills Ascoli Piceno's Piazza Arringo on Easter Monday
Scuccetta is a traditional Easter folk game deeply rooted in the traditions of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region. The rules are as simple as they are irresistible: two challengers hold a hard-boiled egg and clash them point against point; the winner is the one who manages to break the opponent's shell while keeping their own intact, thus winning the losing egg. A series of direct clashes, with elimination rounds, leads to the final that crowns the world champion.
The event is held every year on Lunedì dell'Angelo (Easter Monday), in Piazza Arringo, the charming monumental square of Ascoli Piceno overlooking the Cathedral and the Baptistery. From the morning, game tables are set up, and the square begins to fill with participants and spectators, who come not only from the Piceno area but from various regions of Italy. The organization provides over a thousand hard-boiled eggs for those who wish to participate.
Conceived by Nazzareno "Zè" Migliori, the event has become the symbol of Easter Monday in Ascoli. It is a quintessential intergenerational challenge: at the tables, very young children and elderly people over ninety battle it out in a festive atmosphere that strengthens family cohesion. The older participants pass on the little secrets of the game to the younger ones, starting with choosing the "right" egg, the one with the most resistant shell, which is often decisive in the most hard-fought contests.
In addition to fun, Scuccetta has a charitable soul: the proceeds from registrations are donated to charity, particularly to the Ascoli section of AISM (Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association). Sweet surprises are provided for children, while the event intertwines with other Easter attractions in the city, such as the antique market and the opening of museums, contributing to making Ascoli Piceno one of the most popular destinations for a day trip in the Marche region.
The 36th edition of the World Championship of Scuccetta was held on Monday, April 6, 2026, for Easter Monday, in Piazza Arringo, Ascoli Piceno. The event, coordinated by Nazzareno "Zè" Migliori, saw record attendance, with an increase of about 30% in participants compared to the previous edition and over a thousand hard-boiled eggs provided. The proceeds from registrations were donated to charity to the Ascoli section of AISM. A prologue took place on Easter Sunday morning in Piazza Roma, Castorano.
Prologue: Easter Sunday morning (April 5, 2026) in Piazza Roma, Castorano.
The challenge is open to everyone, from the youngest children to those over ninety. Sweet surprises are provided for children.
Piazza Arringo is located in the historic center of Ascoli Piceno. By car: take the Ascoli Piceno exit from the Ascoli-Mare junction (A14 → SS4 Salaria), then park near the center. By train: Ascoli Piceno station, a short walk from the center.
It takes place on Lunedì dell'Angelo (Easter Monday). Game tables are set up from the morning.
Registration for the competition has a symbolic cost, entirely donated to charity. Attendance is free and open to all.
As Easter Monday is a day of great crowds in Ascoli, it is advisable to arrive early and combine the visit with the antique market and the beauties of the historic center (Piazza del Popolo, the Baptistery, the Art Gallery).
