The Christmas village in Piazza Cristo Re and the Feast of Saint Nicholas in the heart of Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Winter Magic is the event that, in the first days of December, lights up the center of Fontanarosa, a town of just over three thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia, Campania. For a few days, Piazza Cristo Re changes its face and becomes a Christmas village with wooden huts, lights, and scenic decorations: a simple and popular occasion to gather, combining the pleasure of the festivities with the devotion that has always accompanied the month of December here.
The layout of the event follows the classic style of Southern village Christmas markets, but on a human scale, where everything can be explored on foot in a few minutes. In recent editions, the program has included:
Admission is free: you only pay for what you consume or buy at the stalls.
The religious heart of the event falls on December 6th, the feast day of Saint Nicholas of Bari, the patron of the parish of San Nicola Maggiore. In 2025, Holy Mass was celebrated at 6:00 PM by the Bishop of the Diocese of Avellino, Monsignor Arturo Aiello, and represented the most anticipated moment of the four-day event. It is a common feature in most Irpinian towns: the secular and devotional sides of the festival never truly separate, and the decorated square acts as a natural extension of the church celebration.
Immediately after Mass, the monumental artistic nativity scene is inaugurated in the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Misericordia, and it is perhaps the strongest reason to come here in December. This is no ordinary display: the nativity tradition of Fontanarosa dates back to the late 19th century, when Don Gennaro Penta began purchasing figurines in Naples, and in 1935, the Fontanarosa nativity scene was declared a national monument. In 1950, a jubilee year, it was exhibited in Rome at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs, where it drew daily crowds. After difficult decades and earthquake damage, the community restored it in 1982; today it occupies the left nave of the sanctuary and contains about 150 pieces, about thirty of which come from the historical core.
Fontanarosa is defined by three words: stone, water, and grain. The local limestone has shaped generations of stonemasons and can still be seen in the 17th and 18th-century portals and the loggias of the historic center; the water comes from the springs that gave the town its name; the grain comes from the fields stretching toward the Fredane valley. From this bond also arises the town's most famous event, the Tirata del Carro on August 14-15, when a straw obelisk nearly thirty meters high is pulled in honor of the Madonna della Misericordia. Those who visit the town in December find the same ingredients in a winter version, with local products on display: Taurasi wine, extra virgin olive oil, wildflower honey, and the Fontanarosa pepper.
Winter Magic is promoted by the Pro Loco La Fonte of Fontanarosa with the patronage of the Municipality of Fontanarosa. The same association manages other events throughout the year that mark the life of the town, from the Grain Festival to the Ferragosto Fontanarosano, from the children's Carnival to summer initiatives: volunteer work that explains why admission remains free and why many attractions are offered to visitors.
The event lasts a few days and is concentrated on the first weekend of December, close to the 6th. It is a destination suitable for families with children, for those looking for a village Christmas far from the crowds of large markets, and for those who want to combine a visit to the sanctuary and the monumental nativity scene. Fontanarosa is also well-suited as a stop on a broader Irpinian itinerary, between Mirabella Eclano, Grottaminarda, and the Taurasi hills.
As of the update of this page, there are no official communications regarding the dates or the program for Winter Magic 2026 in Fontanarosa, in the province of Avellino. The reference remains the previous edition, held at the beginning of December in Piazza Cristo Re.
For the 2026 edition, it is reasonable to expect the same setup: a Christmas village with wooden huts, lights, mascots and children's entertainment, food and wine stalls with Irpinian products, and the devotional moment on December 6th linked to Saint Nicholas with the opening of the monumental artistic nativity scene in the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Misericordia. However, none of this is confirmed: dates, times, and programs must be verified on the official channels of the Pro Loco La Fonte (website, Facebook page, and Instagram profile) and the Municipality of Fontanarosa, usually in the second half of November.
Fontanarosa is located in the Fredane valley, east of Avellino. By car, you can arrive via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Grottaminarda/Mirabella Eclano exits) and the SS 90 delle Puglie; the nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino. The town is small and Piazza Cristo Re can be reached on foot from any point in the center.
Admission to the Christmas village is free. Sweets, candies, and roasted chestnuts are offered by the organizers; consumption at food and wine stalls and purchases at the wooden huts are paid.
