A running race blending sport and water culture in Anagni
The Water Run is a competitive road race held annually in May in Anagni, a historic town in the Ciociaria region of the Frosinone province, in Southern Lazio. The event is part of a broader project connecting two stages in the Frosinone province—Anagni and Isola del Liri—transforming a running competition into an opportunity to reflect on the value of water and the sustainable management of local water resources.
The approximately 10-kilometer course follows a scenic route through the town and surrounding countryside, alternating between asphalt and dirt paths. Along the way, participants pass historical landmarks linked to the territory's water management, creating a striking blend of sport, nature, and heritage. The race starts at the irrigation facility in Vicolo le Mola di Sotto, a symbolic location for a run dedicated to the element of water.
The Water Run was born from a collaboration between Atletica Frosinone and local land reclamation consortia, aiming to showcase some of the province's most evocative sites through running while raising community awareness about environmental issues. The initiative is part of the National Land Reclamation and Irrigation Week and involves ANBI Lazio, the Land Reclamation Consortium South of Anagni, and the Sora Basin Land Reclamation Consortium, all of whom support the organizers in promoting environmental education and water culture.
The event is a competitive race open to athletes registered with FIDAL, OPES, and other sports promotion bodies, as well as Runcard holders. Each participant receives a bib with a microchip, professional timing services, and an official technical fabric jersey, with access to refreshment stations, insurance, and on-course assistance. The affordable entry fee and convivial atmosphere make the event suitable for both competitive athletes and amateurs.
Running in Anagni means traversing a territory rich in history: known as the City of Popes, the town preserves a charming medieval center, from the Palace of Boniface VIII to the stunning Cathedral with the Crypt of Saint Magnus. The Water Run offers participants the chance to discover the Ciociaria landscape and its core values, combining physical activity with the rediscovery of local heritage and the environment.
The third edition was held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, in Anagni, with the start at 10:00 AM from the irrigation facility at Vicolo le Mola di Sotto. The course, covering approximately 10 km on asphalt and dirt paths, wound through the rural landscape and historical sites of the area. The event, organized by Atletica Frosinone in partnership with ANBI Lazio and local land reclamation consortia, was the first of two stages of the 2026 Water Runs, followed by the Isola del Liri event on May 23.
This race is the first stage of the 2026 Water Runs, which continue on May 23 in Isola del Liri.
