The historic Ciampino city run, featuring both a competitive race and a fun run for everyone
Vola Ciampino is the signature running event of Ciampino, located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the heart of the Castelli Romani area. Born in the early 2000s, it has spanned over two decades of history, becoming one of the most cherished sporting events in the district south of the capital. Every year, on a Sunday in March, the city streets transform into a large open-air circuit traversed by expert runners and casual enthusiasts who choose to run or walk together.
The heart of the event is the 10-kilometer competitive race (a certified course of approximately 9.9 km), valid for the FIDAL Lazio regional calendar and reserved for registered athletes and amateurs. Alongside the competition, there is the 2 km non-competitive fun run, truly open to everyone: families, children, walkers, and anyone wanting to enjoy the day without the pressure of a stopwatch. It is this dual nature—competitive and popular—that makes Vola Ciampino an event capable of attracting over 2,500 participants, from adults to the youngest ones.
The start and finish lines are located on Viale John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Ciampino's central artery. The fun run winds along an urban loop that touches the Ponti di Morena, Viale del Lavoro, Via IV Novembre, Piazza della Pace, Via Italia, Via della Repubblica, and Via Col di Lana. The competitive race extends the route towards Viale di Marino, Via dei Laghi, Via Fontana dei Monaci, Via dell'Ospedaletto, Via Mura dei Francesi, and Via Lucrezia Romana, crossing the city's neighborhoods and districts in a varied and smooth course.
Organized by A.S.D. Runners Ciampino with the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital and the support of the Ciampino Local Police, Vola Ciampino is much more than a race: it is a local festival that involves schools, associations, and families. The streets closed to traffic, the volunteers along the route, and the public cheering on the runners create an atmosphere of great participation, typical of the city runs in the Lazio region. It is an opportunity to discover Ciampino, a city known for its airport but also for its deep connection to the sporting tradition of the Castelli Romani.
The 26th edition of Vola Ciampino confirmed the well-tested format: a morning entirely dedicated to running in the heart of Ciampino, with the city mobilized between volunteers, Local Police, and the public along the route. The event, included in the FIDAL Lazio regional calendar, offered the dual competitive and non-competitive formula, attracting runners from all over the territory south of Rome.
The start was signaled by the Local Police motorcycle, with medical assistance vehicles following each race.
