About Vogalonga

Vogalonga is the great rowing event of Venice: a non-competitive row of about 32 kilometers that crosses the lagoon, touching islands and canals, from Sant'Elena to Burano, from Murano to the Grand Canal. Thousands of rowing boats of all types, from all over the world, gather in St. Mark's Basin to celebrate rowing and protest against the wave motion that threatens the lagoon.

The celebration of Venetian rowing

Vogalonga is one of the most beloved and attended events in Venice: a collective, recreational, and non-competitive row of about 32 kilometers through the lagoon. Born in 1975 as a protest against the wave motion caused by motorboats, it has become an international event over the years, attracting rowers from all over the world.

A route through islands and canals

The start is in St. Mark's Basin, with the cannon shot at 9 AM. The lagoon route touches Sant'Elena, Vignole, Sant'Erasmo, San Francesco del Deserto, Burano, Mazzorbo, San Giacomo in Paludo, and Murano, before returning through the Rio di Cannaregio and ending in the Grand Canal, at Punta della Dogana, in front of the Basilica della Salute.

Thousands of rowing boats

Thousands of rowing boats of all types participate in Vogalonga: caorline, mascarete, gondolas, but also canoes, kayaks, and dragon boats. It is not a raceโ€”there are no rankingsโ€”but a great collective celebration: all participants receive a diploma and a medal. A unique opportunity to experience the Venice lagoon by rowing, away from the usual water traffic.
