The free open-air cinema arena in Rome's Municipio VIII, between Garbatella and the Appia area

Visioni in Sosta is an open-air film festival created to bring the big screen to the summer nights of Rome's Municipio VIII, the area encompassing Garbatella, Ostiense, and the Appia Antica quadrant. The initiative captures the spirit of traditional Roman neighborhood arenas: a screen, a few chairs, and an audience of neighbors gathering to share a film under the stars—one of the rare moments when the city slows down and takes the time to connect.
The festival is among the projects selected by the Roma Creativa 365 – Culture all year round public call, a program through which Roma Capitale supports cultural activities across the city. Visioni in Sosta specifically falls under the section dedicated to free open-air cinema arenas, designed as tools for collective use of urban spaces and cultural preservation of neighborhoods. The project is promoted by Doc Servizi Società Cooperativa, a professional organization in the entertainment sector that manages its operations. The rankings for the call were published by Zètema Progetto Cultura in the summer of 2025.
Like other arenas supported by the call, Visioni in Sosta is designed to offer a selection of Italian, European, and auteur films, with a program capable of engaging an intergenerational audience. Screenings take place in the evening, when the heat subsides and the neighborhood comes alive. The schedule and exact locations are announced by the organizers at the start of the summer season.
Municipio VIII is one of Rome's most distinctive areas: Garbatella, with its 1920s public housing, courtyards, and staircases that make it a natural film set, coexists with the greenery of the Appia Antica and the industrial heritage of Ostiense. Bringing cinema to this context means restoring a space for social interaction to residents and showcasing a neighborhood that Italian cinema has often told stories about and loved.
The hallmark of Visioni in Sosta is its free admission: entry is open until all seats are filled, in line with the public call's mission to make culture accessible to everyone, especially those spending the summer in the city. The festival is part of the broader cultural calendar of Roma Capitale and the landscape of summer arenas that animate parks, squares, and local spaces throughout the capital and the Lazio region.
For summer 2026, the Visioni in Sosta festival is set to light up the open-air screen in Rome's Municipio VIII. The project, promoted by Doc Servizi Società Cooperativa, is among those selected by the Roma Creativa 365 public call by Roma Capitale for free cinema arenas; the project's activity period is expected to fall between spring and autumn 2026.
The proposal focuses on a selection of Italian, European, and auteur films, with free evening screenings designed for the neighborhood. The detailed schedule of evenings, locations, and film titles will be announced by the organizers at the start of the season: it is recommended to check the updated venue and program before each screening.
Rome's Municipio VIII is served by Metro Line B (Garbatella and Piramide stations) and several bus lines. The area is also accessible from the Roma Ostiense station.
Free admission until capacity is reached. Screenings take place in the evening. It is recommended to check the exact venue and updated schedule at the start of the summer season.
As this is a free open-air arena, arriving a little early is recommended to secure a seat for the most popular titles.
