The violet artichoke festival in the garden of the lagoon
The Violet Artichoke Festival of Sant'Erasmo celebrates the symbolic product of the island of Sant'Erasmo, known as "the garden of Venice". Cultivated in the sandy, brackish soils of the lagoon, the violet artichoke is a unique horticultural excellence, with a delicate flavour and a long tradition, from which the first and most tender flower buds yield the prized "castraure".
The festival, hosted in the evocative Torre Massimiliana, offers tastings, culinary advice, guided tours of the island, and the sale of zero-km products directly from producers. It's an opportunity to discover lagoon agriculture and its authentic flavours up close.
Sant'Erasmo is one of the largest islands in the lagoon of Venice, but also one of the least known to mass tourism: a mosaic of vegetable gardens, vineyards, and countryside that retains a rare rural atmosphere just a few minutes from the historic centre. The festival is the ideal time to visit it.
Promoted in Venice (VE), in Veneto, by the Consorzio del Carciofo Violetto (Violet Artichoke Consortium), the festival enhances an identity product of the lagoon and the island's sustainable agriculture, in a day of celebration with free admission immersed in the lagoon landscape.
The 16th edition of the Violet Artichoke Festival of Sant'Erasmo took place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, with a reserve date of May 17 in case of bad weather, starting at 10 AM at the island's Torre Massimiliana, "the garden of Venice".
The day offered tastings and culinary advice dedicated to the prized violet artichoke, guided tours of the island, and the sale of zero-km products. Among the most anticipated events was the tasting of a savoury panettone with artichoke prepared by master pastry chef Daniele Mascia of Pasticceria Al Theatro. Free admission.
