Christmas markets, living nativity, and Irpinian cuisine under the heated tent in Volturara Irpina
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In December, Volturara Irpina—a town of just over 3,000 residents nestled at 620 meters above sea level in the Province of Avellino—stages its most anticipated Christmas event: The Village of Flavors and the Magic of Christmas in the Dragon Valley. For one weekend, the karst plateau that gives the event its name fills with lights, the aromas of Irpinian cuisine, and the sounds of children's laughter. The formula is simple and effective: everything takes place indoors, ensuring that neither rain nor the chill of the Campanian Apennines can spoil the fun.
The heart of the event is the “Antonio Risoli” Structure Tent on Via Petrarca: more than 1,200 square meters of heated space with large dining areas and plenty of seating. This organizational choice has transformed the event, allowing guests to enjoy local dishes and Irpinian wine in total comfort, regardless of the weather, while housing markets, a stage, food stalls, and children's areas under one roof. Parking is available nearby.
The Christmas market stalls open late Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning. Visitors can find:
The event's name is no coincidence. The food stands showcase the rustic cuisine of the plains: the Dragon Valley is famous in Campania for its garden produce, particularly the quarantino bean, a local legume to which Volturara even dedicates a festival in September. In December, these same ingredients return to the table in festive dishes, served in the tent and paired with wines from the province of Avellino.
Alongside the food and wine, the event preserves the popular and religious soul of Southern Christmas with a living nativity scene: local actors bring the nativity to life at scheduled times, usually on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. For children, the North Pole Village is set up, featuring Santa's house and his sleigh, inflatables, photo opportunities with Santa Claus, and entertainment including soap bubbles, balloons, and face painting.
The soundtrack is provided by live bands that take turns on the tent stage over the two days, with a DJ set closing out Saturday night. There is also the tombolata (bingo), the “Cinquina del Dragone” with prizes—a true collective ritual of the Italian Christmas where grandparents and grandchildren sit at the same table, cards in hand.
The Village of Flavors weekend is the highlight of a much broader program, the Volturara Christmas, which runs from the lighting of the decorations in Piazza Roma in early December through to Epiphany. Events include the procession of Saint Nicholas, Christmas workshops, school performances, screenings at the Cinema Serrone, the spectacular descent of Santa Claus from the bell tower, and New Year's bingo. The event is organized by the Municipality of Volturara Irpina and the Pro Loco, in collaboration with local associations.
It is worth arriving a few hours early. The town overlooks the Dragon Plain, a karst plateau that is covered in mist during winter and, according to legend, was born from a clash between Prince Gesio and a three-headed dragon. Defeated, the monster is said to have sunk into the bowels of the earth, carving out the Dragon's Mouth sinkholes, which are still visible today. This landscape, combined with the markets and lights, makes this Irpinian Christmas unlike any other in Campania.
As of the update of this page in late July 2026, there are no official announcements regarding the 2026 edition of the Village of Flavors and the Magic of Christmas in the Dragon Valley. This is entirely normal: the Volturara Christmas program is usually presented by the Municipality of Volturara Irpina and the Pro Loco at the end of November or in the very first days of December.
The two most recent editions were held on a weekend in mid-December in the “Antonio Risoli” Structure Tent on Via Petrarca, a covered and heated space of over 1,200 square meters that allows the entire event to take place sheltered from the cold of the Irpinian plateau. It is therefore reasonable to expect the same location, but no 2026 dates are confirmed and this page will be updated as soon as the official program is published.
To avoid missing the announcement, it is recommended to follow the institutional channels of the Municipality of Volturara Irpina and the Pro Loco, or to call the town hall in Piazza Roma.
