About Village Festival

In Pogliano Milanese, in the northwest hinterland of Milan, the Village Festival celebrates the patron saints Peter and Paul with a unique tradition: the exhibition of the "Boja" and the "Boietto", devils sculpted in wood in the 16th century. On the first Sunday of July, the town comes alive with the Boja market, a procession, and popular celebrations, in a blend of faith, folklore, and community identity passed down for centuries.

The Patrons of Pogliano Milanese

In Pogliano Milanese (Metropolitan City of Milan), the Village Festival coincides with the celebrations for the patron saints Saints Peter and Paul (June 29th), traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday of July. It is the most cherished event of the year for the community.

The Tradition of the Boja

The most characteristic and original element of the festival is the exhibition of the "Boja" and the "Boietto": two devil figures sculpted in wood, whose origin is attributed to a 16th-century carpenter. For centuries, these statues have been proudly displayed during the town's main festival, also giving rise to the characteristic "Boja" market, set up on June 29th and the following Sunday.

Faith and Folklore

Alongside the folkloristic dimension, the festival retains its religious heart, with a procession and celebrations in honor of the patron saints. The historic center comes alive with initiatives, stalls, and community gatherings. The village festival takes place on the first Sunday of July in Pogliano, while in May the celebrations involve the hamlet of Bettolino.
