The patronal feast of Parabiago, between faith, market, and tradition
Saints Gervasius and Protasius, Milanese martyrs whose bodies were found by Saint Ambrose, are the patrons of Parabiago, a town in the Alto Milanese region of the province of Milan. Their feast day falls on June 19th, a date linked to the translation of their relics to the Ambrosian basilica, and for centuries it has marked the religious and civil calendar of the city. The parish church, the spiritual heart of Parabiago, is dedicated to them.
Alongside religious celebrations, the patronal feast has for over ten years been enlivened by the Pro Loco of Parabiago, which organizes a market in the town center with about forty stalls: artisans, hobbyists, painters, and creatives display their work along the village streets. It's an opportunity for a stroll among colors, craftsmanship, and traditions, in a festive atmosphere that involves families and visitors.
One of the most characteristic aspects is the rediscovery of traditional games for children: the wheel, the pirla, and other pastimes of Lombard popular culture take center stage again, offering the youngest a taste of the fun of the past and the older generation a trip down memory lane. A simple and authentic way to pass on the identity of the territory.
The Festival of Saints Gervasius and Protasius is much more than a liturgical observance: it is the moment when Parabiago recognizes itself in its roots, celebrates the saints who safeguard its history, and renews the bond between the community and its territory. For visitors to the Alto Milanese region, it is an opportunity to discover a city with a long tradition and its historic center.
In 2026, the Festival of Saints Gervasius and Protasius returns to Parabiago coinciding with the patrons' feast day on June 19th and the following Sunday. Alongside the religious celebrations in the parish church dedicated to the saints, the Pro Loco organizes the usual market in the town center with about forty stalls featuring crafts, hobbyists, and painters, and offers traditional games for the younger ones, such as the wheel and the pirla.
The detailed program will be released by the Pro Loco and the Municipality in the weeks preceding the event.
Parabiago is located in the province of Milan, in the Alto Milanese region, and is served by the train station on the Milan-Domodossola line (Trenord), as well as by the highway network (A8) and the Sempione state roads. The festival takes place in the historic center.
The patronal feast is held around June 19th, the day of Saints Gervasius and Protasius, and on the following Sunday. Free admission.
