The international harp festival in the City of the Harp and Music
The Viggiano Harp Festival celebrates the deepest identity of Viggiano, a village in the Val d'Agri in the province of Potenza known as the City of the Harp and Music. Here, between the 18th and 19th centuries, the extraordinary tradition of Viggiano harpists flourished, travelling musicians who brought the instrument and Lucanian folk music throughout Europe and the world. The festival was created to preserve and revive this unique heritage.
Now in its many editions, the event is considered one of the longest-running and most significant international events dedicated to the harp. World-class harpists and musicians take to the stage of the Miggiano Theatre, with concerts, ensembles, duos, and trios ranging from classical music to jazz, from folk to the most contemporary fusions. Alongside the concerts, the program includes masterclasses, courses, exhibitions, and moments of in-depth study on the history of the harp.
The heart of the project is the Civic School of Folk Harp Viggianese, which presents its annual recital as part of the festival, and the Viggiano Harp Ensemble, a formation that brings together students and local musicians. It is tangible proof of how the harp tradition is still alive in Viggiano and passed down to new generations.
Organized by the Arpa Viggianese Association with the Municipality of Viggiano, the festival is the ideal opportunity to discover a village with a unique musical vocation, immersed in the landscapes of the Val d'Agri. Evenings of great music, in the name of an instrument that has become a symbol of an entire community.
The Viggiano Harp Festival returns in the summer of 2026 to Viggiano, confirming its role among the most important international events dedicated to the harp.
The 2026 edition, the seventeenth, traditionally spans several evenings in early August at the Miggiano Theatre in Viggiano.
