About Viareggio Cup

The Viareggio Tournament, also known as the Viareggio Cup or Coppa Carnevale, is Italy's oldest and most prestigious international youth football competition. Established in 1949 alongside the famous Viareggio Carnival, every spring it brings dozens of Under-18 teams from around the world to the pitches of Versilia. From the Stadio dei Pini to the final, the tournament has always been a showcase for the champions of tomorrow: many world-class football stars took their first steps here.

The Viareggio Tournament, the cradle of tomorrow's champions

The Viareggio Tournament โ€” officially the Viareggio Cup and popularly known as the Coppa Carnevale โ€” is the oldest and most celebrated international youth football competition organized in Italy. It is held every year in Viareggio, in the heart of Versilia, in the province of Lucca (Tuscany), and attracts Under-18 teams from the most important Italian and foreign clubs to the pitches of the Tuscan coast.

A history spanning over seventy years

The event was born from the intuition of the Centro Giovani Calciatori, founded in Viareggio on November 20, 1947, by its president Torquato Bresciani. The first official edition was held in 1949: the inaugural match, between a Versilia representative team and one from Livorno, was played on February 24, 1949, at the Campo dei Pini. Since then, the tournament has traditionally taken place during the Viareggio Carnival, from which it takes the name Coppa Carnevale, intertwining sport with the city's most famous festival.

Over the years, the Viareggio Tournament has become an international showcase for talent: many world football stars have stepped onto a major pitch for the first time right here, before establishing themselves in big clubs. For this reason, the event is universally considered the "cradle of tomorrow's champions".

Format and venues

The modern format includes a group stage followed by a knockout phase (round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final). The teams, all in the Under-18 category, come from every continent: in addition to major Italian clubs, European, American, and African teams participate, confirming the tournament's international vocation.

Matches are played in several sports facilities: the heart of the event is the Stadio dei Pini "Torquato Bresciani" in Viareggio, dedicated to the founder, where the inaugural match and the final are traditionally played. Several group stage matches are also hosted in other municipalities in Tuscany and, occasionally, in Liguria and Emilia-Romagna. In parallel to the men's tournament, the Viareggio Women's Cup, the women's version of the competition, is also held.

An appointment that goes beyond football

For Viareggio and all of Versilia, the tournament is much more than a sporting event: it is a city tradition that enlivens the spring, attracts fans, professionals, and scouts from all over the world, and is inextricably linked to the festive atmosphere of the Carnival. Attending a match at the Stadio dei Pini means breathing in the history of authentic football and discovering the protagonists of the future in advance.
