The Passion of Christ performed live through the streets of three villages in the Sabato Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Via Crucis - The Living Passion of Christ is an itinerant sacred performance that, during Holy Week, connects three small municipalities in the Sabato Valley, in the province of Avellino (Campania): Chianche, Petruro Irpino, and Torrioni. Rather than taking place in a single historic center, the journey of the Passion is divided among the three towns, which for one evening become a single, large open-air stage in the heart of Irpinia.
It is a rare and, in some ways, essential formula: these are tiny communities of just a few hundred inhabitants each, who have chosen to pool their actors, volunteers, and resources to keep a tradition alive that elsewhere is supported by much larger towns. The result is a deeply engaging theatrical procession, where those who act, sew costumes, and guide the public are almost always local residents.
The route follows the fourteen stations of the Passion, divided among the three villages according to the structure established in the 2025 edition:
The audience does not remain in one spot; they move along with the performance. To make this possible, a free shuttle service connects the locations, allowing even those who have difficulty walking to follow the entire story, from the condemnation to Golgotha.
The initiative is promoted by the Lapis Pro Loco of Petruro Irpino and the Planca Pro Loco of Chianche, with the participation of the Generidea ODV association of Torrioni, the Petruro Irpino Youth Group, and the Torrioni Youth Forum, under the patronage of the three involved municipalities. The role of the youth is one of the project's hallmarks: they interpret most of the characters and manage the staging along the alleys.
In Petruro Irpino, the tradition of the Living Passion has recent but solid roots: before the three-town itinerant formula, the village staged the highlights of Jesus' journey—from the entry into Jerusalem to the Last Supper and Golgotha—on its own, through the initiative of the Petruro Giovani group and the municipal administration.
With fewer than three hundred inhabitants, the Municipality of Petruro Irpino is one of the smallest in Campania. The village sits at an altitude of about 500 meters, in a panoramic position on a rocky spur in the middle Sabato river valley: its name derives from petra, meaning rock. The historic center is clustered around the 14th-century church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, formerly an abbey, which preserves a bell from 1581 and a ceiling fresco created in 1920.
Chianche, famous in the area for its wine production, and Torrioni, another small center overlooking the same valley, complete a triangle of villages just a few kilometers apart—a geography that makes the idea of a shared ritual feel natural.
In Irpinia, Holy Week is marked by dozens of popular rites, including processions of the Dead Christ, flagellants, traditional songs, and sacred performances. The Living Via Crucis between Chianche, Petruro Irpino, and Torrioni fits into this calendar with its own unique character: no grand spectacle, but an evening journey through squares and alleys, with scenes illuminated in plain sight and the audience following in silence.
Visitors from outside will find an authentic opportunity to discover a lesser-known part of the province of Avellino, made of tiny villages, views of the Sabato valley, and a cordiality that, on festive evenings, almost always translates into an invitation to stay.
As of the update of this entry, no official confirmation of the Living Via Crucis between Chianche, Petruro Irpino, and Torrioni for 2026 has been published; the event does not appear in the provincial calendar of Irpinian Via Crucis for the year. We therefore recommend checking directly with the organizing Pro Loco or the social media pages of the three municipalities before planning your trip.
At the time of writing, no official communication regarding a 2026 edition of the Via Crucis - The Living Passion of Christ between Chianche, Petruro Irpino, and Torrioni, in the province of Avellino, has been identified. The event does not appear in the list of 2026 Irpinian Via Crucis published by the Province's portal, which includes performances in Grottolella, Fontanarosa, Atripalda, Vallata, Mirabella Eclano, and other municipalities.
This does not mean the event has been canceled: the three organizing Pro Loco are small volunteer-based organizations that often announce the program only in the weeks immediately preceding Easter through their social media pages and municipal notice boards.
Dates and detailed program will be updated as soon as the organizers make them public.
Petruro Irpino is located in the middle Sabato valley, about twenty kilometers from Avellino and just over thirty from Benevento. By car, it can be reached via the SS 88 (Avellino-Benevento) with a detour towards Chianche and Torrioni; the most convenient motorway exit is Benevento on the A16 Naples-Canosa, then following signs for the Sabato valley. The reference railway station is Altavilla Irpina, on the Avellino-Benevento line.
As this is an itinerant event across three villages, it is advisable to leave your car in one of the free parking areas at the entrance to the towns and use the free shuttle service provided by the organizers to move between stations. The routes wind through the streets and alleys of the historic centers: comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for April evenings, which remain cool in the hills, are recommended.
Participation in the Living Via Crucis is free and open to all, as is the case for most popular sacred performances in Irpinia.

The area offers farmhouses and small accommodations between Chianche, Altavilla Irpina, and Petruro Irpino; for a wider choice of hotels, it is better to stay in Avellino or Benevento, both less than forty minutes away by car.
