About Via Crucis Chianche-Petruro-Torrioni

During Holy Week, the villages of Chianche, Petruro Irpino, and Torrioni unite for a single living Via Crucis. The fourteen stations of the Passion of Christ are not held in one place, but spread across three neighboring municipalities in the province of Avellino. The first four stations take place in Chianche, stations five through eight in Petruro Irpino, and nine through fourteen in Torrioni, where the most intense finale is staged. An evening journey of faith, tradition, and community spirit, complete with free shuttle buses between the villages.

A Living Passion uniting three villages

The Via Crucis across Chianche, Petruro Irpino and Torrioni is not just another procession: it is a living re-enactment of the Passion of Christ that, rather than remaining within the borders of a single town, traverses three neighboring municipalities in the province of Avellino, in Campania. The fourteen traditional stations are divided among the three villages, and the audience truly moves along, on foot and via shuttles provided by the organizers, following the narrative from one historic center to the next.

The result is an event with the authentic flavor of community festivals in inland Irpinia: the actors are local residents, the sets are the alleys and squares of the villages, and the audience is composed of the inhabitants of the three towns alongside visitors from nearby areas. Those seeking a Holy Week experience far from the major tourist flows will find here a cozy and genuinely popular atmosphere.

The fourteen stations, village by village

In the 2025 edition, the route was divided as follows:

  • Chianche — stations one through four: the condemnation and the beginning of the climb to Calvary.
  • Petruro Irpino — stations five through eight: the meeting with Simon of Cyrene, the gesture of Veronica, the women of Jerusalem.
  • Torrioni — stations nine through fourteen: the final falls, the crucifixion, and the deposition—the concluding and most dramatic part of the entire performance.

Those arriving directly in Torrioni witness the finale of the Passion, while those who follow the entire itinerary experience the full journey: three villages, three different atmospheres, and a single story that concludes under the evening sky of Irpinia.

Who organizes it

The initiative is promoted by local associations: the Pro Loco «Planca» of Chianche, the Pro Loco «Lapis» of Petruro Irpino, and the Generidea ODV association of Torrioni, with the collaboration of the Youth of Petruro Irpino and the Youth Forum of Torrioni. The event is held under the patronage of the three involved municipalities and is included in the provincial Sistema Irpinia calendar of the Province of Avellino.

It is an organizational model that deserves attention: three villages that, taken individually, would have few actors and limited resources, join forces with volunteers, vehicles, and public support to build an event capable of attracting visitors from the entire area. The direct involvement of youth groups is what keeps the tradition alive year after year.

Torrioni and the Irpinia context

Torrioni is a small municipality of just over five hundred inhabitants, located at an altitude of about 645 meters in the inland area of the province of Avellino, in Campania. The town hall overlooks Piazza Giuseppe Lombardi, and the town's patron saint is Saint Michael the Archangel, celebrated on September 29th. Its compact size and intimate historic center make the village particularly suitable for an evening performance: the stations follow one another at short distances, and the audience always remains close to the actors.

Chianche and Petruro Irpino also belong to the same belt of small hilly towns, where volunteer associations play a decisive role in cultural life. The living Via Crucis thus becomes, beyond a moment of devotion, a concrete opportunity for promoting the territory and fostering intergenerational connection.

When it takes place

The event is tied to Holy Week: the 2025 edition was held on Friday, April 18th, starting at 6:00 PM, on Good Friday. The reference period remains the month of April, with dates changing each year according to the liturgical calendar of Easter.

As of the writing of this guide, no official date has been published for the 2026 edition: those wishing to participate should check the announcements from the organizing Pro Loco associations and the three municipalities in the weeks leading up to Easter.

How to participate

  • Participation in the Via Crucis is free and open to all, with no tickets or reservations required.
  • In 2025, a free shuttle service was provided to connect the three villages along the route.
  • Comfortable shoes are recommended: you will be walking on sloping roads and alleys typical of hill towns.
  • Dress appropriately for April evenings at altitude, when temperatures drop significantly after sunset.
  • Respectful behavior is requested: although it is an event open to everyone, it is a performance with deep religious significance rather than a tourist show.

Via Crucis Chianche-Petruro-Torrioni — edition 2026

For the 2026 edition of the Via Crucis across Chianche, Petruro Irpino and Torrioni, no official date has been released yet. The event is traditionally held during Holy Week, in April, and in 2025 it took place on Good Friday starting at 6:00 PM. Those wishing to participate should keep an eye on communications from the «Planca» and «Lapis» Pro Loco associations, the Generidea ODV association, and the three involved Irpinia municipalities.

The 2026 edition of the Via Crucis across Chianche, Petruro Irpino and Torrioni has not yet been officially announced. At the moment, neither the date nor the program of the fourteen stations is available, and no institutional source from the Province of Avellino or the three municipalities has published any statements regarding it.

The reference remains Holy Week, which falls in April: the performance is held on Good Friday, with the stations distributed among the three Irpinia villages. Until official announcements are published, the date indicated in this guide is purely indicative.

We recommend checking the social media pages of the organizing associations and the Sistema Irpinia portal in the weeks leading up to Easter, when the departure time, route, and shuttle service are usually announced.

Costs

Participation is free and open to all. The shuttle service between Chianche, Petruro Irpino, and Torrioni was also offered free of charge in the 2025 edition.
