About Varoni Living Nativity

In the days following Christmas, the Varoni hamlet of Montesarchio transforms into a small Bethlehem. The Living Nativity, organized by the L'Arca cultural association together with the Santissima Maria Assunta parish, brings the Via Mosca village to life with over fifty performers: a walking route through illuminated alleys and Nativity scenes brought to life by local faces, in the heart of the Caudina Valley in the province of Benevento.

The Varoni Living Nativity, a little Bethlehem in the Caudina Valley

In the days following Christmas, the Varoni hamlet of Montesarchio stops being a quiet agricultural village in the Caudina Valley for a few hours and becomes the Bethlehem of the Gospel story. The Varoni Living Nativity is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the province of Benevento: a walking tour through the alleys of the Via Mosca village, illuminated by warm lights and animated by over fifty performers who recreate the gestures, trades, and scenes of the Nativity.

This is not a show built for the masses: it is a local ritual, put on every year by the inhabitants for the inhabitants, which over time has ended up attracting visitors from all over the interior of Campania. Those who arrive in Varoni do not find a stage, but a village that opens up and tells its own story.

The Via Mosca village as a natural backdrop

The choice of location is the true strength of the event. The Via Mosca village, one of the oldest inhabited centers in the Caudina territory, is neither reconstructed nor masked: the stone houses, arches, courtyards, and old cellars directly become the rooms of the nativity scene. The visitor walks inside the scene, moving from one living tableau to another according to an itinerary marked by the organizers.

The effect is that of a small journey through time. The darkness of the winter evening, the low lights along the alleys, and the silence of the village restore to the nativity scene the domestic and popular dimension it had in southern tradition, when the representation of the Nativity was a neighborhood affair before it was a tourist attraction.

Over fifty performers: a community event

Each edition mobilizes over fifty performers, including volunteers from the association and citizens of the village. There are no professional actors: the roles are entrusted to the families of Varoni, often with multiple generations in the same scene.

  • Walking route inside the village, divided into several living tableaux
  • Representation of the Nativity as the concluding moment of the journey
  • Set-ups curated by volunteers, with objects and tools of the local peasant tradition
  • Hospitality and security service guaranteed by the association's members

It is this choral dimension that explains the longevity of the event: the nativity scene belongs to the hamlet that produces it.

Who organizes it: the L'Arca association and the parish

The living nativity is curated by the L'Arca cultural association in collaboration with the Santissima Maria Assunta parish. The goal declared by the organizers is twofold: to enhance one of the oldest villages in the Caudina municipality and to offer the community an authentic Christmas moment, built without large budgets but with strong collective work.

The same association is also present in the rest of the Montesarchio Christmas calendar: in recent seasons it has proposed, on January 5th, The Arrival of the Three Kings, a procession that starts from the Moschi-Varoni area and reaches Piazza V Maggio, ideally closing the cycle opened by the nativity scene with the Epiphany.

When it takes place

The event is traditionally scheduled in the days immediately following Christmas. In the 2023 and 2024 editions, the nativity scene was held on December 26th, Saint Stephen's Day, in the evening; in 2025 the representation was brought forward to Sunday, December 21st, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, taking advantage of the holiday afternoon. It is an event concentrated in a single evening: it is always advisable to check the date of the current edition, as it may shift by a few days from one year to the next.

Montesarchio and the Caudina Valley

Montesarchio, in the province of Benevento, is one of the historic gateways to the Caudina Valley, in Campania. Dominated by the tower and the castle that close the historic center, the city preserves one of the most important collections in the area in the National Archaeological Museum of the Sannio Caudino, with the famous crater signed by Assteas. The Varoni Living Nativity is part of a rather lively municipal Christmas calendar, which accompanies the holiday period with initiatives for children, musical events, and decorations in the center.

Tips for visiting

  • Dress in layers: the route is entirely outdoors and December evenings in the Caudina Valley are cold and damp
  • Wear comfortable shoes with sturdy soles, as the village alleys are made of stone and are on a slope
  • Arrive a little ahead of the opening time so you can park outside the village without rushing
  • With small children, a flashlight may be useful: the lighting along the route is dim

Varoni Living Nativity — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Varoni Living Nativity has not yet been announced. The L'Arca cultural association usually confirms dates and times only in the weeks preceding Christmas, and in recent seasons the performance has been held between December 21st and 26th in the Via Mosca village. Those who wish to participate must therefore follow the association's and the Santissima Maria Assunta parish's channels to find out the exact day.

At the moment, no official date has been published for the 2026 edition of the Varoni Living Nativity, in the hamlet of Montesarchio (province of Benevento). This is normal for this type of event: the L'Arca cultural association and the Santissima Maria Assunta parish communicate the program only in December, when the set-up of the Via Mosca village is underway and the performers are confirmed.

Based on previous editions, one can reasonably expect a single evening in the last decade of December, with the route opening in the late afternoon or early evening. The dates indicated in this sheet for 2026 are therefore indicative and do not replace the official announcement.

Those planning a visit can monitor the information channels of the Caudina Valley and the local Sannio press, which every year collect the complete calendar of living nativity scenes in the province of Benevento.
