Eleven days of festivities in the Varoni district of Montesarchio, featuring a door-to-door procession, the Flight of the Angel, and the Melanzana nel Cassone Festival.

Less than a kilometer from the center of Montesarchio, in the province of Benevento, the Varoni district celebrates its most important event in the first half of August: the solemn festivities in honor of Mary Most Holy Assumed into Heaven. This is not a festival built for tourism; it is the celebration of an agricultural village in the Caudine Valley, Campania, which organizes eleven days of religious and secular events every year thanks to the parish, the festival committee, and local volunteers.
The period is the classic one for the Assumption: starting around August 6th with the novena, reaching its peak on August 15th, and concluding around the 17th. In between, there are daily masses, rosaries, concerts in the square, and food stalls.
The devotion of Varoni to the Assumption runs deep: parish inventories have recorded it since at least 1713. What makes this festival unique is the form of the procession: the statue of the Madonna does not just travel along the main streets, but is carried door-to-door, from threshold to threshold, to bless the families. Oral tradition links the rite to an epidemic—the plague, according to the most common account—that once decimated the district. The survivors asked for the image of the Madonna to visit every home, and from that vow, the procession that continues today was born.
Until 1950, the eve of August 14th was dedicated to the 'Dead Madonna', with a solemn mass and evening procession; the proclamation of the dogma of the Assumption by Pius XII that same year ended that devotional practice, and the eve subsequently took on the secular and gastronomic character it has today.
The day of the Assumption is the core of the event. After the solemn mass in the morning, the statue leaves the church accompanied by the marching band, which traditionally performs operatic and symphonic repertoires. Before and after the procession, the Flight of the Angel takes place, the most emotional moment: a suspended figure descends to pay homage to the Heavenly Mother before the crowd gathered in the square.
On August 14th, for the secular celebration, the district hosts the Melanzana nel Cassone Festival, one of the longest-running food festivals in the Sannio region: in 2025, it reached its 46th edition. Born in the 1980s as a gastronomic accompaniment to the festivities, it has built a dedicated following throughout the Caudine Valley.
The star is the eggplant grown in the area, served in local peasant recipes and accompanied by white Falanghina wine from Sannio. The stalls and table service in the church square are managed by the Varoni nel Cuore group.
The secular program alternates popular shows and concerts by Neapolitan artists on the stage in the church square: in 2024, for example, a 90s revival show on August 16th and a concert by Alessio on the 17th; in the past, the square has also hosted Gianluca Capozzi. The closing is almost always entrusted to a second fireworks display.
The parish church dates back to the early 17th century: founded around 1627 as Santa Maria de' Lucerino, its facade displays images of Saint Joseph and Saint Cajetan and a niche with the statue of the Assumption. Varoni was an autonomous municipality during the Napoleonic era and was annexed to Montesarchio by royal decree on January 10, 1867.
The municipality of Montesarchio is one of the historic gateways to the Caudine Valley, in Campania: the center is dominated by the tower and the castle, and the National Archaeological Museum of Sannio Caudino houses the famous crater signed by Assteas.
At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Varoni Assumption Festival, in the district of Montesarchio in the province of Benevento. This is the standard situation for this type of event: the parish and festival committee release the poster with the religious and secular program only at the end of July or in the first days of August, once the evening guests and fireworks displays are confirmed.
The reference remains the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, which falls on August 15th and forms the center of the festival with the solemn mass, the door-to-door procession, and the Flight of the Angel. Around that date, the preparatory novena, musical evenings in the church square, and the Melanzana nel Cassone Festival on the eve are usually organized.
The period indications provided in this file for 2026 are therefore indicative and do not replace the official announcement. Those planning a visit can follow the parish channels, the Madonna Assunta Festival Committee page, and the local press of the Caudine Valley, which publishes the complete calendar of patronal feasts in the Sannio region every year.
The festival takes place in the Varoni district of Montesarchio (BN), around the church of Santa Maria Assunta, less than a kilometer from the town center. By car, Montesarchio can be reached via the SS 7 Appia, which crosses the Caudine Valley connecting Benevento to Caserta and the Naples area; from the town entrance, follow the signs for the district. By train, the city is served by the Caudine Valley railway line connecting Benevento to Cancello and Naples: from the station, the district is not easily accessible on foot; a vehicle is recommended.
During the festival days, the streets of the district are crowded and partially closed to traffic for the procession and stalls. You can leave your car along the access roads and continue on foot: spaces are limited, so it is best to arrive early.
Religious celebrations, the procession, the Flight of the Angel, and the fireworks are free to attend. At the Melanzana nel Cassone Festival, you only pay for what you consume at the stalls, with the modest prices typical of local village festivals.
The reference for dates and the program is the parish of Santa Maria Assunta in Varoni, which publishes the religious and secular poster every year, together with the Madonna Assunta Festival Committee, which is active on social media. The detailed program is usually released in the weeks immediately preceding August 15th.
A few minutes away are the historic center of Montesarchio, the tower and castle with the National Archaeological Museum of Sannio Caudino, and the Caudine villages of Bonea and Bucciano, which border the district.
