The Chianocco stop of the Susa Valley itinerant festival: cinema, memory, and civic engagement
The Valsusa Filmfest is an itinerant film and cultural festival that has been traveling through the Susa Valley since 1997, blending cinema, historical memory, environmental awareness, and social inclusion. Born from the collaboration between the Gruppo 33 of Condove, the valley's Habitat Committee, and figures like Carla Nosenzo Gobetti and filmmaker Armando Ceste, the festival owes much to Bruno Carli, a partisan and the association's first president until 2002, to whom the event's signature award is dedicated today.
Every year, the festival spans multiple municipalities in the upper and lower valley, with the heart of the film competition in Condove and numerous side events elsewhere. Chianocco, a small town in the Province of Turin in Piedmont, is one of the locations hosting these widespread events: the Taverna Tortuga hosts the ceremony for the local section of the Bruno Carli Award, an appointment that unites the town's public with the valley's network of associations and volunteers.
More than just a screening, the Chianocco stop is a community moment: the local Bruno Carli Award is presented to local entities and individuals who have distinguished themselves through civic commitment, the defense of rights, and environmental protection. The evenings are often enriched with readings, testimonies, and live music, in full harmony with the spirit of the festival, which for nearly thirty years has used the language of cinema and culture to keep the historical memory of the Susa Valley alive.
Each edition of the Valsusa Filmfest is dedicated to a specific figure or theme: through short film competitions, documentaries, and thematic sections, the festival offers a program that engages with current events and major social and environmental issues. The Chianocco stop is part of this journey, offering residents and visitors the chance to experience firsthand an event that has become a cultural landmark for the entire valley.
The event takes place in the evening at the Taverna Tortuga in Chianocco and, like most of the festival's appointments, has a strong participatory and local character. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the most authentic side of the Valsusa Filmfest, away from the spotlight of big theaters but very close to the stories and people of the territory.
