The closing concert at the Cathedral of San Giusto in Susa
Regie Armonie Along the Via Francigena is one of the most fascinating musical events in the Turin area: a series of free concerts that, every year between May and June, takes the audience on a sonic journey along the ancient Via Francigena route in the heart of the Susa Valley. After visiting churches and sanctuaries throughout the valley, the festival traditionally concludes in the town of Susa, in the province of Turin, at the monumental Cathedral of San Giusto.
The Cathedral of San Giusto, overlooking Piazza San Giusto next to an ancient gate in the Roman walls, is one of the most important monuments in the Alpine Piedmont. Founded in the 11th century as a Benedictine abbey by the will of Olderico Manfredi II, Marquis of Turin and Susa, it was elevated to a cathedral in 1772 and has been a national monument since 1940. Its organ, located on the back wall, is the true star of the festival's closing concert.
The Regie Armonie program favors sacred, Baroque, and classical repertoire: organ, voice, violin, transverse flute, and early instruments alternate evening after evening across the various stops in the Susa Valley. The Susa concert, in particular, highlights the cathedral's imposing organ paired with the transverse flute, in a dialogue between a historic instrument and a solo voice capable of enhancing the acoustics of the nave.
Beyond the music, Regie Armonie is an invitation to rediscover the historical, artistic, and cultural heritage of the Susa Valley. The festival is organized by the Associazione Itinerari in Musica and is supported by the Regional Council of Piedmont, the Unione Montana Valle Susa, and the participating municipalities, with the collaboration of local entities such as the Rotary Club Susa and Val Susa and the support of the Municipality of Susa.
