About Vahrner Kirchtagsfest

The Vahrner Kirchtagsfest is the traditional patronal feast of Vahrn in the Isarco Valley, dedicated to Saint George (Hl. Georg) and organized by the historic Schützenkompanie Vahrn. The day blends faith, tradition, and community: it begins with a solemn Mass in the parish church of Saint George and continues with festivities in the village square, accompanied by music. It is a defining event for this South Tyrolean village, where the Schützen in historical costumes uphold a custom passed down through generations.

The Vahrner Kirchtagsfest: A blend of faith and Tyrolean tradition

The Vahrner Kirchtagsfest is the patronal feast of the municipality of Vahrn, located in the heart of the Isarco Valley (Eisacktal), just a few kilometres from Bressanone in the autonomous province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. The Kirchtag — literally "church day" — is one of the most deep-rooted customs in South Tyrolean culture: it celebrates the parish's patron saint and brings the entire village community together for a day of reflection and celebration. In Vahrn, the occasion is dedicated to Saint George (Hl. Georg), the village patron, and is managed by the Schützenkompanie Vahrn, the historic company of Tyrolean marksmen.

The Parish Church of Saint George

The heart of the festival is the parish church of Saint George, which dominates the village centre. The two-aisled building dates back to the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1325; it was expanded with a Gothic choir in the 15th century, while receiving Baroque-style renovations in the 18th century. The 40-metre-high Gothic bell tower, completed in 1595, houses five bells and remains one of the symbols of the Vahrn landscape. Inside, it preserves a Romanesque Madonna and Child, venerated as a miraculous image, along with works linked to the school of Leonhard von Brixen.

The role of the Schützenkompanie Vahrn

The Schützenkompanie Vahrn plays a central role in the day's events. The Schützen companies of South Tyrol have upheld three fundamental values for centuries: the defence of the homeland, faith, and tradition. The Vahrn company, refounded in 1953 after a long period during which the Tyrolean custom was banned, was among the founding members of the Südtiroler Schützenbund in 1958. During the Kirchtag, the Schützen, dressed in historical costumes, accompany the religious celebration, lending the festival its solemn and distinctive character.

A day of community

The festival unfolds in two parts: the solemn Mass in the morning at the church of Saint George and the festivities in the village square, where the community gathers for music and conviviality. It is an opportunity to experience the authentic atmosphere of a South Tyrolean village, where religious and popular life naturally intertwine. The Vahrner Kirchtagsfest thus represents a small but precious piece of the heritage and popular traditions of the Municipality of Vahrn and the Trentino-Alto Adige Region.
