Three days of street sports in Piazza Schettini, featuring 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball, and street football
The Urban Summer Games turn Piazza Schettini, one of the most central and popular squares in Pompei, into a true open-air sports arena. For three consecutive days, the public space makes way for courts, hoops, and nets. This summer event, designed to introduce local youth to sports, has quickly become a staple in the summer calendar of the Municipality of Pompei, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania.
The heart of the event consists of three simultaneous tournaments, all dedicated to disciplines that have become symbols of contemporary street sports. The three-on-three format ensures short matches, a fast pace, and constant rotation of teams on the court, allowing the audience to enjoy an uninterrupted succession of challenges.
The tournaments are structured to accommodate participants of different ages: there are categories reserved for younger players and others for adults, with balanced skill levels accessible even to non-professional athletes. Registration is open to both teams and individuals, but spots are limited due to logistical and scheduling reasons, so early booking is recommended. All participants receive an event gadget, while the top-ranked teams in each category receive official prizes.
The Urban Summer Games were born from the collaboration between the Wolf Cultural Association, led by Francesco Tufano, and the Giga Association, led by Gaetano D'Ombré, two organizations active in the Pompei area. The stated goal goes beyond competition: it is about offering young people an open-air meeting space during the summer, promoting sports as a tool for social interaction and positive use of urban spaces. It is no coincidence that the choice fell on a city square rather than an indoor facility: sports leave the gyms and are showcased to everyone, including passersby and families who stop to watch.
Piazza Schettini is one of the iconic spots of Pompei's summer: over the years, it has hosted concerts, shows, and sporting events, cementing its status as the city's open-air living room. During the Urban Summer Games, the setup occupies the square from the afternoon until the evening, when the air cools down and the city center fills with people—a timing that makes the event particularly suitable for families and those looking to combine an evening stroll with live sports.
Pompei is known worldwide for its archaeological park and the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, a pilgrimage destination for over a century. Alongside this international dimension, the city also lives a daily life made of neighborhood events, tournaments, and popular festivals. The Urban Summer Games are a full-fledged part of this second soul: they are an event primarily designed for the people of Pompei, but one that anyone in the area—including tourists—can freely follow, discovering a contemporary and youthful side of a city more often associated with antiquity.
From July 9 to 11, 2026, the central Piazza Schettini transformed into an open-air sports hub to host the second edition of the Urban Summer Games. The initiative, promoted by the Wolf Cultural Association of Francesco Tufano and the Giga Association of Gaetano D'Ombré, confirmed the first year's formula, focusing on an afternoon and evening time slot—from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM—designed to escape the July heat and catch the foot traffic of Pompei's center.
The program revolved around three tournaments played simultaneously in the same square: 3x3 basketball, 3x3 beach volleyball, and 3x3 street football, three disciplines that have become emblematic of street sports. The competitions were organized by age group, with categories dedicated to youth and others reserved for adults, with skill levels intentionally balanced to remain accessible even to non-registered players.
Registrations, which opened in the preceding weeks, had a limited number of spots for logistical and scheduling reasons. All participants received a gadget upon registration, while the teams that reached the top spots in their respective categories received the event's official prizes.
From Thursday, July 9, to Saturday, July 11, 2026, daily from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, in Piazza Schettini, Pompei.
Each tournament is divided into age-based categories: both youth and adult categories are available, with balanced and accessible skill levels.
Registration is mandatory to participate, with spots limited due to logistical and scheduling reasons. Event gadgets for all registered participants and official prizes for the top-ranked teams in each category.
Piazza Schettini is located in the center of Pompei, a short distance from the Sanctuary. By train, the city is served by the Circumvesuviana Naples–Poggiomarino line (Pompei Santuario stop), the Naples–Sorrento line (Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri stop), and the main Pompei railway station. By car, take the Pompei Ovest or Pompei Est exits on the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway; on event days, it is advisable to use peripheral parking lots and reach the square on foot.
The event takes place in the afternoon and evening, from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Access to the square is free for the public; however, to compete, registration for the tournaments is required, with limited spots available.
Bring water and a hat during the hottest hours, as the square is uncovered. Those arriving from out of town can combine a visit to the Archaeological Park of Pompei during the day with the evening sports in the square; local accommodation, including hotels and bed and breakfasts, is plentiful but should be booked in advance in July.
