The great May Day concert blending music and civil activism
The Uno Maggio Taranto Libero e Pensante is the massive free concert that brings the Ionian capital in the province of Taranto, Puglia, to life every May 1st. Established in 2013 as the city's response to the environmental and employment crisis surrounding the former ILVA steel plant, it is organized and entirely self-funded by the Comitato Cittadini e Lavoratori Liberi e Pensanti (Committee of Free and Thinking Citizens and Workers). It is not just a concert: it is a public square where music intertwines with civil commitment, the narrative of labor, and the defense of health and rights.
The formula that made the event famous alternates top-tier Italian artists with voices from civil society on stage: activists, journalists, representatives from organizations like Amnesty International and Emergency, and witnesses to the country's major environmental and social disputes. The audience, often numbering in the tens of thousands, follows the marathon from the early afternoon until late at night, with live television and streaming broadcasts bringing Taranto to all of Italy.
Since 2022, the event has been held at Parco Massimo Battista, the Archaeological Park of the Greek Walls in the Solito-Corvisea districtโa green space returned to the city and named after an unforgettable activist of the Committee. The choice of venue is a message in itself: reclaiming urban spaces and experiencing them as a common good.
In just over a decade, Uno Maggio Taranto has become a national benchmark for those seeking a May Day with strong social content, serving as an alternative and complementary event to the Rome Concertone. For years, the artistic direction has brought together figures linked to the territory, such as singer-songwriter Diodato, trumpeter Roy Paci, and actor Michele Riondino, a Taranto native and the face of the event.
Admission is always free and open to everyone: no tickets, no presales. It is an event designed as a collective good, supported by fundraising and volunteer work, open to families, young people, and fans of music and civil activism.
The thirteenth edition of Uno Maggio Taranto Libero e Pensante was held on Friday, May 1st, 2026, at Parco Massimo Battista, starting in the early afternoon and broadcast live until the evening. The year's theme, "Let's remain human", paid tribute to the memory of Vittorio Arrigoni fifteen years after his death, weaving together music, rights, and international solidarity.
The artistic direction, led by Diodato, Roy Paci, Michele Riondino, and Valentina Petrini, crafted a day that alternated major concerts with moments of reflection, featuring the presentation of Amnesty International's annual report and numerous interventions from the world of activism.
Opening in the early afternoon (from 2:00 PM) with debates and speeches, followed by the long musical marathon until the evening.
The debates were moderated by Maria Cristina Fraddosio.
