The classical and chamber music season of the University of Messina, in the heart of the Strait of Sicily
The University Concerts are one of the most long-standing and deeply rooted cultural initiatives of the University of Messina. Now in its 36th edition in 2026, the Concert Season has become a highly anticipated event that turns music into a vehicle for participation, dialogue, and social cohesion between the university and the city. The concerts are held in the prestigious Aula Magna of the Rectorate, located in Piazza Pugliatti in the center of Messina, the capital of the eponymous metropolitan city in Sicily.
The series is distinguished by the variety of its repertoire: from Baroque music to the great Romantic tradition, from piano and chamber music to opera and excursions into tango and jazz. Each evening features soloists, duos, quartets, and ensembles exploring both legendary composers and more original works. The season is organized in collaboration with the "Arcangelo Corelli" Conservatory of Music in Messina, which contributes through its faculty and young musicians.
Concerts typically take place on Thursday evenings in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate, in an intimate and focused atmosphere that enhances the listening experience. The program alternates between major chamber repertoire and evenings dedicated to piano four-hands, wind instruments, vocal performances, and original projects that combine music and spoken word.
A hallmark of the season is its focus on young people, who are involved through initiatives like the OpenStage_UniMe contest, and its openness to the public: admission is free, welcoming the university community and all music lovers in the city. The University Concerts thus reaffirm the role of the University of Messina as a cultural hub for the region, capable of bringing great music to a wide audience.
The 2026 edition of the University Concerts featured eleven events in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate of the University of Messina, from March 19 to June 8. The series opened with the "Corelli" Baroque Ensemble and unfolded through evenings dedicated to piano, chamber duos, vocal performances, and original projects.
Highlights included: the Mazzamuto–Concas violin and piano duo, piano recitals by Andrea Cannata and Alexander Kobrin, the Manuli–Nastasi clarinet and piano duo, the Campanella–Leone piano four-hands, the Corelli Quintet, opera evenings with sopranos Desirée Rancatore and Daniela Schillaci accompanied by pianist Salvatore Messina, an evening of film music with Buttà and actor Marchetti, and a concert featuring accordion, guitar, and strings by Biscardi and Oteri.
All concerts, organized with the "Arcangelo Corelli" Conservatory, were free of charge.
The concerts are held in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate of the University of Messina, located at Piazza Pugliatti 1, in the city center.
By train: Messina Centrale station is just a few minutes from the Rectorate, reachable on foot or by public transport. By car: From the A20 (Messina–Palermo) or A18 (Messina–Catania) motorways, take the Messina Centro exit. By plane: The nearest airports are Catania Fontanarossa and Reggio Calabria, connected to Messina by bus and ferry.
Admission is free and open to all. Concerts are usually held on Thursday evenings (typically at 9:00 PM). It is recommended to check the university website for the updated calendar and specific start times for each evening.
