A festival of research in the heart of Rome

Una Striscia di Terra Feconda is the Italian-French jazz and improvised music festival that has been bringing the best of contemporary musical creation to Rome since 1998. Organized by the Associazione Culturale Teatro dell'Ascolto and directed from its inception by Paolo Damiani and Armand Meignan, the event is considered one of Italy's most important historic jazz festivals, recognized by the Ministry of Culture and part of the Europe Jazz Network and I-Jazz.

Jazz, improvisation, and cultural dialogue

The festival was born from a clear vision: to build an artistic bridge between Italy and France, bringing musicians from both sides together through residencies, original productions, and world premieres. Each edition revolves around a theme that serves as a creative roadmap for the artists—not just a series of isolated concerts, but a true laboratory where improvised music is seen as an act of freedom and resistance against market standardization.

Festival venues

The event takes place in various spaces across the capital and the Lazio region, highlighting diverse locations:

• Casa del Jazz (District VIII), the main venue nestled in the greenery of a villa confiscated from organized crime;
• Teatro di Tor Bella Monaca (District VI), a cultural hub in the Roman suburbs;
• Museo Civico di Zoologia, featuring concerts in the evocative Sala della Balena;
• local spaces such as the Cittadella della Musica in Civitavecchia and other sites across Lazio.

Great masters and new talents

Over the years, the festival has hosted some of the most significant names in European and international jazz, pairing established masters with young talents who are often supported through residencies and commissions. The multi-year project Insulae Mediterranee reflects the festival's focus on Mediterranean music and an open, hybrid approach to jazz.

Supported by the City of Rome and co-produced with the Fondazione Musica per Roma, Una Striscia di Terra Feconda is an essential event for jazz and experimental music enthusiasts. Its longevity, now in its twenty-ninth edition, and the quality of its programming make it one of the most authoritative musical experiences of the Roman autumn.
