The master of abstraction at Villa e Collezione Panza
From April 9, 2026, to January 10, 2027, Villa e Collezione Panza in Varese welcomes "Josef Albers: Meditations", an exhibition dedicated to one of the absolute protagonists of 20th-century abstraction. The exhibition is promoted by the FAI - Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (Italian National Trust) in collaboration with the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation and is curated by Nicholas Fox Weber, executive director of the Foundation.
The exhibition brings together a selection of Josef Albers' works focusing on two fundamental cycles: Variant/Adobe (1946-1966) and Homage to the Square (1950-1976), the series with which the artist explored the infinite perceptual possibilities of the square and color for over twenty years. Among the works on display are pieces from international collections, such as the Guggenheim Collection in Venice and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris.
The exhibition naturally dialogues with the identity of Villa Panza, a historic residence that houses the renowned contemporary art collection of Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, particularly sensitive to themes of light, space, and perception. Albers' work, which made color a rigorous field of study, finds an ideal setting here to be experienced as a meditative practice.
Villa e Collezione Panza is one of the FAI's properties in the Municipality of Varese, the provincial capital, and is one of the most visited cultural destinations in the area. The exhibition represents one of the most significant exhibition events of 2026 in Lombardy.
