The neighborhood's masquerade parade, featuring vintage cars and allegorical floats
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Trigoria Carnival is one of the youngest and most heartfelt neighborhood festivals in Municipio IX of Rome, in the southern part of the capital. The first edition took place on February 3, 2024, and by the following year, the event had solidified its place as the moment the entire neighborhood gathers in the streets. It is not a monumental carnival with dozens of papier-mâché floats; it is a community-driven celebration, built by the hands of residents, which finds its strength in its intimate, familiar atmosphere and sense of belonging.
The heart of the event is the masquerade parade along the streets of Trigoria, with a meeting point on Via A. Giuffrè in the early afternoon. Masked groups join a procession of vintage cars—mostly Fiat 500s with panoramic roofs—carrying traditional Italian masks. The parade is enhanced by several allegorical floats assembled on-site by volunteers, who reinterpret different themes each year.
The event is born from the collaboration between the Trigoria Neighborhood Committee, the APS «Insieme per Trigoria», and the Parish of S. Maria Assunta e S. Michele Arcangelo, in partnership with the «M. Russo» Comprehensive Institute and the APS «I.N.S.I.E.M.E.», under the patronage of Roma Capitale — Municipio IX. It is this network of associations, schools, and the parish that ensures the construction of the floats, the preparation of costumes, and the organization of the route every year.
Trigoria is a suburb in southern Rome, best known for its football training center, but in daily life, it is a complex territory made up of scattered residential clusters with few gathering places. The Carnival was created precisely to meet this need: to create an occasion where the different souls of the neighborhood meet in the street, without tickets or barriers. For many families, it is the highlight of the year, when children leave home already in costume and neighbors recognize one another.
Those visiting Rome during the Carnival period can combine the Trigoria parade with the numerous other initiatives that enliven the capital's districts and the municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, from the Castelli Romani—Frascati, Genzano, Velletri, Castel Gandolfo—to Tivoli, Palestrina, and Fiumicino. However, Trigoria offers something different: no tourist crowds, a slow pace, and the chance to see up close how a community builds its own festival from the ground up.
The Trigoria Carnival is held during the carnival season, between late February and early March depending on the liturgical calendar, generally on a Sunday afternoon starting at 2:30 PM. Dates are announced by the Neighborhood Committee and the promoting associations a few weeks in advance on social media channels and through the communications of Municipio IX.
As of the writing of this entry, there are no official announcements regarding a third edition of the Trigoria Carnival. The main events dedicated to the 2026 Carnival in Rome and Lazio do not mention the neighborhood appointment, and no posters or programs have been published by the Trigoria Neighborhood Committee, the APS «Insieme per Trigoria», or Municipio IX.
As this is a neighborhood festival organized by volunteers, communication often happens close to the event and mainly via social media channels: it is therefore possible that the parade took place without press coverage. We will update the entry as soon as verified information becomes available.
Trigoria can be reached by car from the Grande Raccordo Anulare, exit 26 (Via di Trigoria / Pontina), continuing along Via di Trigoria to the center of the neighborhood. By public transport, Cotral and Atac bus lines heading towards the Laurentino-Trigoria area depart from the Roma Termini railway station or the Metro B line (Laurentina stop). The parade meeting point is on Via A. Giuffrè.
Free and open participation for both spectators and masked groups.
The event takes place entirely outdoors: it is advisable to dress in layers and allow for a few hours of walking along the route. During the parade, some neighborhood streets may be temporarily closed to traffic: it is best to park early in the surrounding streets. For updated dates, we recommend checking the Trigoria Neighborhood Committee's Facebook page.
The neighborhood has few accommodation facilities: the most convenient choice is to stay in the EUR area or along Via Laurentina, about twenty minutes away by car, or in the center of Rome if you wish to combine the visit with sightseeing.
