The early spring walking race along the Trebbia river, on Hannibal's footsteps
The Trebbia March on Hannibal's Trail is the early spring running event in Gragnano Trebbiense, a small municipality in the Province of Piacenza, in Emilia-Romagna. Organized by the Pro Loco of Gragnano Trebbiense and recognized by FIASP (Italian Federation of Amateurs for Sport for All), it is a non-competitive, free-pace walk, open to everyone: athletes, families with children, and simple outdoor walking enthusiasts.
The route winds from the town to the heart of the Trebbia river park, a protected natural oasis that runs along the river's course. Participants can choose from three routes of varying lengths, mostly on dirt roads:
The start is open from early morning, with registration, start, and finish at Piazza della Pace, in the center of Gragnano. Along the way, walkers cross the green scrub and the first spring blooms, with views of the river that make the march particularly evocative.
The theme of the event recalls a famous episode of ancient history: precisely in the territory between the Trebbia river and the Luretta stream, in December 218 BC, the Battle of the Trebbia was fought, during which the Carthaginian general Hannibal defeated the Roman consul Tiberius Sempronius Longus. Walking along these paths means ideally retracing the footsteps of those ancient armies, in a landscape that has largely remained rural and fluvial.
The Trebbia March is now a well-established event on the Piacenza running calendar: each edition attracts hundreds of participants โ around 700 in recent editions โ who take advantage of the day to enjoy the nature of the Piacenza countryside as spring awakens. The event is valid for the FIASP National Competition "Piede Alato" (Winged Foot).
The Trebbia March 2026 was held on Sunday, March 22 in Gragnano Trebbiense, confirming itself as the early spring running event of the Piacenza area. Approximately 700 participants, including many families, set off early in the morning with free starts from Piazza della Pace.
The three routes of 6, 12, and 18 km, mostly on dirt roads, developed from the town towards the Trebbia river park, a protected oasis bordering the river. A sunny day accompanied the walkers along the paths, amidst the spring bloom and views of the waterway.
Non-competitive, free-pace event, organized by the Pro Loco of Gragnano Trebbiense and recognized by FIASP, valid for the National Competition "Piede Alato" (Winged Foot).
The march typically takes place on a Sunday in the second half of March, with open starts from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM.
