The re-enactment of classic cars and motorcycles on the legendary route to Erice
The Trapani-Monte Erice Historical Re-enactment celebrates one of the most fascinating chapters in Sicilian motoring: the historic Monte Erice hill climb, first held on September 5, 1954, and originally organized by the Automobile Club of Trapani. That first race, spanning over 16 kilometers, was won by Pasquale Tacci in an Alfa Romeo 1900 TI. Since then, the climb toward the medieval village of Erice has become a symbol for enthusiasts across Italy. The re-enactment, organized by the F. Sartarelli Auto and Moto Club of Trapani and affiliated with the Italian Historic Automotoclub (ASI), brings dozens of vintage cars and motorcycles back to these roads every year, transforming a competitive memory into a grand cultural and tourist festival.
The event typically takes place over a weekend in June. The first day kicks off in Trapani, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, with technical and sports inspections and a public vehicle exhibition that attracts onlookers and collectors alike. In the evening, one of the most evocative moments takes place: the night parade in the city center, featuring an Elegance Contest and a procession of cars accompanied by crews in period costumes. The second day is dedicated to the event's symbolic heart: the re-enactment along the route that recalls the historic climb toward Erice, with parades on the traffic-restricted stretch between Valderice and the summit of the village in the province of Trapani, Sicily.
The re-enactment usually hosts over eighty vehicles from numerous ASI-affiliated clubs, featuring brands that have made automotive history. The Elegance Contest rewards not only the most fascinating vehicles but also the best pairing of car and period attire, recapturing the elegant and refined atmosphere of past decades. Alongside the parades, the event includes social gatherings and cultural visits to the area, showcasing the beauty of the Municipality of Erice and the entire Trapani district.
More than just a motor show, the Trapani-Monte Erice is a tribute to the collective memory of a territory that has made motoring part of its identity. The roar of historic engines, the scenic roads climbing toward Erice, and the elegance of the crews create a unique experience capable of thrilling both enthusiasts and casual observers. It is an appointment that, edition after edition, confirms the unbreakable bond between Western Sicily and the myth of the four wheels.
The twenty-seventh edition of the Trapani-Monte Erice Historical Re-enactment was held on June 20-21, 2026, with the official presentation and initial technical inspections starting on Friday, June 19, at the F. Sartarelli Auto and Moto Club headquarters on Via Salvatore Bertino in Trapani.
Saturday, June 20: Technical and sports inspections and public vehicle exhibition in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in Trapani, followed in the evening by the night parade in the city center with the Elegance Contest and a procession of cars accompanied by period costumes.
Sunday, June 21: Re-enactment along the route recalling the historic climb toward Erice, with two parades on the traffic-restricted stretch between Valderice and the village summit, in memory of the first Monte Erice edition in 1954.
Erice and Trapani can be reached by car via the A29 motorway (Palermo-Mazara del Vallo). Trapani-Birgi Airport is approximately 15 km from Trapani. Erice is also connected to Trapani via the famous cable car.
The inspections and the night parade are held in Trapani, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and the historic center; the re-enactment parades take place along the Valderice-Erice route.
The event is open to the public and free of charge.
