Trail running and hiking through the Monti Simbruini, reaching the Sanctuary of the Santissima Trinità in Vallepietra
The Trail della Fede is a mountain race that, every year between May and June, brings hundreds of running enthusiasts to Vallepietra, a village of a few hundred inhabitants perched in the upper Aniene Valley, within the Municipality of Vallepietra, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Lazio. The name is no coincidence: the routes wind through the village streets and the trails of the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park, leading to sites associated with the Sanctuary of the Santissima Trinità, a destination for centuries-old pilgrimages and a religious symbol for the entire region.
The event offers two complementary formats, designed for both trained athletes and casual walkers:
The day concludes with an awards ceremony and final refreshments for all participants, in a festive village atmosphere that involves the entire community.
Starting with the fourth edition, held on May 24, 2026, the race became the Franco Bonavenia Memorial, in tribute to the runner from the Podistica dei Fiori of Isola del Liri who passed away in May 2025 at the age of 64, following a sudden illness during a run in Vallepietra, the place he loved. A cross placed at the Sanctuary of the Santissima Trinità by his brother Romano, a minute of silence before the start, and the red jerseys with his motto "Batte sempre forte" (It always beats strong) worn by his family made the 2026 edition particularly moving: about 120 athletes participated across the race and the walk.
The Trail della Fede is organized by ASD Runners Club Anagni in collaboration with the Municipality of Vallepietra and the AICS committee of Frosinone, with the patronage of the Pro Loco of Vallepietra and the support of the Italian Red Cross and Civil Protection along the route. Registration and timing are managed by Race Service.
Launched in 2023, the trail has quickly become a highly anticipated event in the Lazio running calendar: an opportunity to run or walk in one of the wildest and most authentic corners of Lazio, discover the village of Vallepietra, and climb toward a sanctuary that has drawn pilgrims from Lazio and Abruzzo for centuries. Sport, nature, faith, and memory intertwine in a day that is well worth the trip to the upper Aniene Valley.
The 2026 edition of the Trail della Fede, the fourth, was held on Sunday, May 24, and was the first dedicated to Franco Bonavenia, the runner who passed away in May 2025 after a sudden illness during a race in Vallepietra. Before the start, a minute of silence and the cross placed at the Sanctuary of the Santissima Trinità by his brother Romano honored the athlete; his son Roberto ran the race and his wife Rita took part in the walk, both wearing the red jersey with the motto "Batte sempre forte".
About 120 participants started from Piazza Italia: at 10:15 AM, the 15 km competitive race (825m D+) finished at the Tre Croci square; at 10:20 AM, the 6 km walk toward the Sanctuary began. Among the men, Alfonso Marcoccio (ASD Runners Club Anagni) won in 1h24'37", ahead of Pierluigi Colella (Atletica Città dei Papi Anagni) and Enrico Gatta (Running Team Alatri). Among the women, Federica Pelosi (Top Trail) succeeded in 1h44'11", followed by Camilla Cignitti (Trail Monti Simbruini) and Federica Di Murro (Podistica Solidarietà).
The organization was managed by ASD Runners Club Anagni with the Municipality of Vallepietra, AICS Frosinone, the Pro Loco, the Italian Red Cross, and the Civil Protection.
Vallepietra can be reached by car from Rome via the A24 motorway (Vicovaro-Mandela exit), continuing toward Subiaco and then along the road of the upper Aniene Valley to the village (about 90 km from the capital). The meeting point is Piazza Italia, in the village center, with a gathering at the Tre Croci square.
Online registration is available on the Race Service portal (raceservice.it): the fee is 12 euros for the 15 km competitive race, with the possibility of registering on-site on the morning of the race; the 6 km non-competitive walk costs 5 euros, with registration open until 30 minutes before the start. Proceeds from the walk are donated to the Sanctuary of the Santissima Trinità.
The competitive route is a true mountain trail (825m D+): trail running shoes and adequate preparation are recommended. For the walk, comfortable clothing and hiking shoes are sufficient.
