The arrival of the great Euregio cycling race in the heart of Bolzano
The Tour of the Alps is one of the most highly regarded stage cycling races on the international circuit, included in the UCI ProSeries calendar and organized by G.S. Alto Garda A.s.d. Every year, in the second half of April, the event traverses the territories of the Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino Euroregion, ideally linking Austria and Italy across five challenging mountain stages. As the successor to the historic Giro del Trentino, the race has always served as a proving ground for the best climbers ahead of the Giro d'Italia.
In the Municipality of Bolzano, capital of the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol and the heart of the Trentino-South Tyrol Region, the race experienced one of its most anticipated moments. The 2026 edition, which celebrated ten years since the Euroregional shift, touched the capitals of the two autonomous provinces and the Austrian Land for the first time, starting in Innsbruck and finishing in Trento and finally Bolzano. The city welcomed the finish line along Corso Italia, enlivening the center with an afternoon of top-tier cycling.
The final leg, the 128.6-kilometer Trento-Bolzano, was designed to shake up the general classification despite its limited distance. After departing from Trento, the riders tackled the Wine Road and the climb of Caldaro Alta (a second-category King of the Mountains climb), before twice repeating the demanding circuit featuring the ascent toward San Genesio and Montoppio, both key features in the KOM program. The final descent toward Bolzano provided a tense and spectacular conclusion.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the arrival in Bolzano is a major celebration for the entire South Tyrolean territory. Along the route and in the finish area, the atmosphere of top-level cycling is palpable, with fans, families, and curious onlookers crowding the streets and squares to witness the race pass by. Watching the stage is free, and the day also represents an opportunity to discover the historic center of Bolzano, nestled between medieval arcades and the backdrop of the Dolomites.
The 49th edition of the Tour of the Alps took place from April 20 to 24, 2026, over five stages, with the grand finale in Bolzano. The final leg Trento-Bolzano (128.6 km) crossed the Wine Road and the climbs of Caldaro Alta and San Genesio-Montoppio, with a start at 12:00 PM and an expected arrival at 3:15 PM along Corso Italia.
The winner was the Italian Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), who launched a solo attack in the final: he won the stage and took the general classification with a 40-second lead over Egan Bernal and 50 seconds over Thymen Arensman. Pellizzari also claimed the best young rider jersey. This marks the first Italian victory in the race since the days of Vincenzo Nibali.
Bolzano can be reached by car via the A22 Brenner motorway (exit Bolzano Sud or Bolzano Nord). The city is served by the Bolzano railway station, on the Brenner line, which is well-connected to Trento, Verona, and Innsbruck.
The finish line is set up along Corso Italia, in the center of Bolzano. During the race, traffic modifications and temporary road closures are expected along the route.
Watching the race pass and the finish along the streets is free of charge.
